This is why I am SO angry with Mark Carney. We. Do. Not. Have. Time. We cannot keep fucking around and kicking this climate can down the road to a future generation. We either fix this now or literally billions of people will die IN MY LIFETIME (and I am 50!)
The other scenario, which scientists now say “recent data aligns more closely with,” is 3C of warming. At that level, the Exeter authors warn of up to 4 billion deaths. Four billion. That is half the planet. In 26 years or less. Even for those lucky enough to survive the worst weather events, life as we know it would cease to exist due to war, involuntary mass migration, and “catastrophic mortality events from disease, malnutrition, thirst and conflict.” According to the lead author of the report, there is no realistic plan in place to avoid this scenario.

Also being ignored by virtually every media outlet & politician out there: human civilization as we've come to know it developed during a stable climate period that we have now destroyed. The future we are staring down will be beyond the worst dystopian hellscape imaginable if we don't fix this.
Let’s do the context thing again: 2C will mean we have completely left the stable climate period known as the Holocene. This is the 11,000-year-old era that has given us large-scale crop and livestock agriculture, which gave us cities, written language, modern science and medicine, and warm beds and showers.

🧵 This is what people are just not getting. Ten years ago, the abnormal planetary warming we are currently seeing would have been unthinkable. Catastrophic. But we're like that frog in the pot... the water keeps heating up but we refuse to jump out and deal. www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-mas...
For some badly-needed context, the last three years, likely for the first time in over 100,000 years, have averaged above the Paris Accords’ “do not cross” 1.5 degrees celsius planetary warming. Only ten years ago, that was considered catastrophic, but now mainstream news tells us it’s just a number.

Anyone in the #gardening space know anything about #grapes? Most of my Somerset grape clusters look like this. At first I thought I just wasn't watering enough and they were drying out, but now I think it might some kind of disease. My Trollhaugen grapes do not look like this. 🌱

Purple Air map is showing really bad AQHI in the core. And even worse in Kanata, Barrhaven, and areas further west and south of those. Better in the eastern parts for now. I miss being able to open my windows on cool days. Never seem to get a chance to cool the house down anymore. 🫠
Screen shot of a map of Ottawa and surrounding suburbs with coloured circles. Red circles with numbers ranging from 8 to 12 in the core and to the south and west (indicating very poor air quality) and two yellow circles with numbers 4 and 5 (indicating moderate air quality) can be seen to the east.

Today I learned that Carney is one of those Albertans who still seems to have anti-Trudeau issues related to the national energy policy of decades ago. This explains so much. 😑 www.hilltimes.com/2026/07/13/c...
In a revealing “forward guidance” video, one of the prime minister’s regular meditations on the “world as it is, not as we wish it to be,” Carney said that, as a boy in Edmonton, he watched the devastating impact of Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s national energy policy on his neighbours. He thereby revived a cherished—and only half-true—myth about Alberta’s repeated mistreatment at the hands of eastern bastards. Unhelpful.

Anyhow, lots of depressing stuff this morning, so here are some garden purples. (Some day, I am going to buy a flower that is marketed as "blue" in colour that actually ends up being BLUE and not purple. Hasn't happened yet, but someday... one of my great gardening pet peeves.) 🌱 #bloomscrolling

It's a "Sweet Kate", aka "Blue & Gold" variety so the purple flower really stands out against the yellow leaves.Clematis "Multi Blue" flower which is a blatant lie, it's actually a dark purple and NOT blue.Small lupins in a garden bed. I just don't understand how we're pushing this stuff into *everything* without any consideration whatsoever for human or even basic infosec concerns. To hell with anyone who gets their life destroyed in the process, I guess. Can't stand in the way of "progress", now can we?
Finally, the document says Canada will try to solve national challenges through AI missions — the first being in health care, then other priority sectors like energy and natural resources, agriculture, transportation, manufacturing and robotics and government services.

Seriously, do people not see how nonsensical this is? AI is going to *create* 250,000 jobs? 90,000 for youth? (I call BS. It's destroying jobs, not creating them.) And we're going to push AI into libraries and schools, but somehow, nebulously "protect Canadians and children from AI harms"?
By 2031, the draft strategy seeks to do the following, among other goals:

Protect Canadians and children against the risks from AI and online harms.
Provide Canadians access to free AI literacy training, including reaching one million entry-level post-secondary students.
Create up to 90,000 AI-related jobs and work opportunities for young Canadians.
Support creating up to 250,000 new jobs through AI adoption.
Boost Canada's business adoption of AI from 12 per cent today to more than 50 per cent by 2030.
Help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access public compute to strengthen commercialization and adoption.
Build a multilateral alliance so Canada moves from reliance to resilience by having sovereign autonomy in key AI capabilities.

Found it! The "fruit salad" was fruit cocktail, and you're not supposed to drain it or anything -- the whole thing gets dumped into the batter. (And if I make this, I will definitely be reducing the amount of sugar in it... but that was probably what made it taste so good when I was a kid. 😂)
Gateau à la Salade Aux Fruits

2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
19 oz fruit salad (canned)
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shredded coconut

Grease two 8-inch cake pans. Beat egg with a fork.
Mix flour and sugar in large bowl. Add fruit
salad and egg. Add vanilla and baking powder.
Mix well. Pour batter into pans. Mix brown
sugar and coconut. Sprinkle over top of two
cakes. Bake in a 350F oven for 40 to 60 minutes.

Here's another bit:
Its central finding is that Canada's cognitive sovereignty, defined as the ability of Canadians to make political decisions freely without foreign coercion or manipulation, is not simply under threat. It is being actively contested. Three distinct categories of interference are converging on Alberta simultaneously: Russia operating covertly through state-aligned media infrastructure, the United States operating overtly through officials and a MAGA-aligned influencer ecosystem, and commercially motivated AI-generated content networks operating for profit. The motives differ. The effects are the same: normalising separation, amplifying distrust in institutions, portraying Canada as internally divided and politically unstable, and creating the kind of uncertainty that deters international investment

Holy crap, this article. I don't know whether this is an RCMP or CSIS thing, but *somebody* better be doing something about this. Anyone in Alberta who is working or did work with the Americans to try and destroy this country should face jail time. 😡
What the US gains from a broken Canada##

The "I wasn't aware" framing papers over a question of motive. What does the Trump administration, or its aligned operatives, actually get from a destabilised Canada?

Alberta sits on approximately 167 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, nearly four times the volume of the entire United States. It accounts for 84% of Canada's total oil production and 60% of its natural gas output. The value of Alberta's energy production reached $139 billion in 2024. Bitumen production alone generated $95.8 billion that year. The oil sands can sustain current production rates for more than 140 years.

The US already buys nearly all of it: approximately 95-97% of Alberta's crude exports flow south. The problem, from a USian energy-dominance perspective, is that Canada controls the regulatory environment, the pipeline policy, and the pricing. A separated or annexed Alberta removes all three constraints simultaneously.

LOOK AT THESE GORGEOUS MASTERPIECES!!! One of the teachers from the class visit I did a couple of weeks ago sent me scans of all the beautiful crow art, featuring Streak going through the portal, that the kids did for my book! These are just a few of them! 😊🥹 #MiddleGrade #Booksky

It's fine. This is fine. Who needs to breathe anyway, right? 😰😣 #allergies

Everything else may be going wrong lately, but my daffodils are blooming. 😊💛🌱 #bloomscrolling

I have shops on Itchio and Payhip where people can buy my fantasy books directly! The Payhip shop is in $ CAD (and it's the only place you can get my 3-book bundle), and the Itchio shop is $ USD. 😊 ➡️ shop.NPTwrites.com ➡️ nptwrites.itch.io #BookSky #Reading
A stormy blue and purple background with the covers of the four currently published books in my Arcanium series lined up in a row: River of Crows, Mirror of Wolves, Stone of Serpents, Chalice of Caladriai. Gold text at the top says: "The Arcanium Saga". Smaller white snippets of text are arrayed at angles all around the covers. Those snippets give an overview of what to expect in the series and they say:
- epic magic battles
- awesome origami magic
- told from multiple points of view
- magic manifests differently for everyone
- tyrant emperor with dark magic
- enchanted army of birds
- new friends become there-for-you-always friends
- siblings
- a villain and henchman you love to hate
- action! danger! mayhem! snark!
- people tell me they bought it for their kids then stayed up all night to read it themselves
- a mysterious crow with a white feather
- a different take on shapeshifters
- grumpy gardening sorcerer with an apothecary shop
- hobs and gnomes and dragons (oh my!)
- Chosen One (... maybe...?)

Well, hello there, you gorgeous thing! When did you pop up? 😍🌱 #bloomscrolling #NewFlower
A dwarf iris, which is a gorgeous dark purple colour in real life, but my phone camera sucks so it looks more blue-ish in the photo, against brown mulch.

Oooo... pretty! I have a few crocuses but nothing else is up yet. Squirrels keep digging these up and running off with them, which is very annoying, but I did manage to get a couple of pics.🌱 #bloomscrolling

Somebody is taking full advantage of the rare sunbeam that has finally decided to show up in this never-ending winter. Can't say I blame her.
A white and dark grey cat is stretched out on her back with both front paws stretched above her head on a doormat with blocky green and red colours in front of a patio door. There is a sunbeam falling across her belly.

I have an upper middle grade fantasy series and 2 places to buy direct. There's a bundle deal for the first 3 books available in my Payhip author shop, and all books are also available on Itchio (but not as a bundle - that's only in my author shop). 😊 🐦‍⬛✨ ➡️ shop.nptwrites.com ➡️ nptwrites.itch.io
