So enjoyed digging into what life was like in #JaneAusten 's house in Steventon in the 1790s, drawing on the archaeological finds to shape our understanding: nicolapritchardpink.substack.com/p/digging-up...

I'm thrilled to share the publication of my research into #JaneAusten tourism: jasna.org/publications... It ended up being a bigger project than I at first imagined, but I absolutely loved it. Being able to use real data to challenge a common misconception of Austen tourists was totally worth it.

After having loved my time on the recent Steventon Rectory dig uncovering #JaneAusten ’s birthplace, in this post I explore what the house may have looked like - not an easy task in the face of conflicting records! nicolapritchardpink.substack.com/p/digging-up...

As the #FestivalOfArcheaology gets underway, I've reflected on my time digging at the #JaneAusten birthplace in Steventon. This is the first in a two-part series on both the dig and the Steventon site as a lens for exploring rural life in the past. nicolapritchardpink.substack.com/p/digging-up...

Today, 18 June, is the birthday of Agnes Porter - a governess in the time of Jane Austen - who was a truly inspiring woman. I've so enjoyed learning all about her life. You can read all about her at: open.substack.com/pub/nicolapr...

How is it so cold today?! We've had to put the heating on and it's June. At least I remembered that even #JaneAusten did the same back in 1811.

Honestly, I PROMISE this is genuine research. After the final few days tweaking my article following peer review, I'm just checking a quote is correct. Oh, and it's from the #Austenland movie. #guiltypleasure

Where has this map been all my life? Just found that there's a historic country houses map of the UK and I am loving viewing it at this scale - the land has been swallowed by estates! The only thing is...how can I possibly visit them all?!

One of my fave #Regency conduct books The Mirror of the Graces (pub. 1811) never fails to delight. Just spotted this top tip for flirting - showing an ankle. After all, "There is a je ne scai quoi in a fine ancle". Quite.

Loved this talk at the brilliant #winchesterbooksfestival on Charlotte Brontë's clothes - fascinating what they can tell us about the past and their owners. @eleanorhoughtonhis.bsky.social gave a superb talk. Can't wait to read the book 📚

Gorgeous day out today, even if it was a bit chilly. Thrilled to see the soft leaves of this horse chestnut tree unfolding into the sunlight. Turns out #Wordsworth captured this moment in poetry

As the #WinterOlympics draw to a close I wanted to take a peek at ice skating in 18th century Britain to see what I could find out. Did Brits ice dance? And did #JaneAusten ever ice skate? Find out more in my latest Substack: nicolapritchardpink.substack.com/p/ice-skatin...

I started 2025 with a #janeausten ball, singing Happy Birthday and enjoying a slice of cake ... and I've managed to close the year by speaking for Hampshire Writers' Society, singing Happy Birthday and enjoying a slice of cake! What a fabulous 250th Austen celebratory year it's been.

So thrilled to attend today's service of thanksgiving for #JaneAusten at Winchester Cathedral and see the new statue unveiled. Plus there were a few faces from the 1995 P&P who read excerpts from the novel during the service so wonderfully.

So I'm minding my business researching feelings in the 18th century and stumble upon this image apparently representing the emotion of despair... Surely this is an image of someone in front of a Georgian wind machine??? Thoughts on a postcard.

Am loving reading a #JaneAusten era Glossary of the Dorset Dialect. Faves so far are: Popples for pebbles and "Gie's a pud" meaning "Give me a hand." Love it. I could literally read this book all day...

I'm enjoying reading Johanna Schopenhauer's memoir about her travels to London atm, and this comment about a dinner party made me chuckle - reminded me very much of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice ;) #JaneAusten

Had such a wonderful time last weekend at a #JaneAusten Regency ball at the Great Hall in Winchester. I've never seen the room so beautiful and it brought to mind Miss Bates' comments in Emma: 'This is meeting quite in fairyland!—Such a transformation!'

I just found out it's British #Sandwich Week which naturally led me to try and uncover the truth behind the sandwich's origin story. Apparently the Earl of Sandwich invented it while gaming. But is this story simply apocryphal or could it actually have been true? bit.ly/3H7hIjt

I can't believe I'd never noticed this before, but Regency women had a half-and-half hair style - their 'front' hair (which went from behind the ears) was cut short, like an extended fringe (bangs), and their 'back' hair was left to grow long. Want to try it?
