The above is from HV Morton's I Saw Two Englands, the story of two trips around England he took in 1939, one before the outbreak of war and one after.

Reading an account of someone visiting the commandant of an RAF training school in 1939 who "Judging by the chestful of medals had seen an awful lot of trouble in the last war". He's exactly the sort that Reform types fetishise, yet he seems to have a very different view of immigration to them.

Been delving into my memory to recreate my favourite mixtape from when I was first a student in 1987/8. Can't remember the order and my taste was questionable at the time. Some were from records and others taped off the charts with a box tape recorder. Why haven't I done this before?

I never found out what I broke. Couldn't see anything wrong but there was a scraping every time I drove downhill. I made it to Venice and back though. Mechanic said he welded something next MOT but I missed what he said and was too embarrassed to ask.

Similar to these bastards. Still can't believe I made that (with some small damage to the rear suspension when the back wheels slipped on the second one. I felt like Michael Knight.

Quiet weekend. Haven't seen anyone today and that's fine. It's a leaf turning, horse chestnut, chill in the air October Saturday. Can you believe it's the last of summer?

Go to your camera roll and search “boat” and then post a picture of a boat you like. Sierra Leone, River No.2 beach in the distance.

It's become a cliché to say we're reliving the 1930s, but this conversation from 1939 feels very relevant.
§ 8.

In the morning I went to look at the church again, and met there a fellow-guest from the hotel, a professor of history. I remarked that the news from Danzig was not too good that morning.

"I know nothing about it," replied the historian. "I gave up reading the papers last September and feel better for it in every way." food

"But surely you glance at the headlines?"

"No, I refuse to do that. I like to base my opinions on facts, and there are not sufficient facts available these days on which anyone could base an opinion, therefore I feel I miss nothing. Is it going to rain again, do you think?"

We talked about the weather, as everyone does in England, and about Mary, Queen of Scots, as everyone does at Fother-inghay.

I suggested that it was not easy to understand the callous cruelty of the Elizabethans who murdered Mary, Queen of Scots.

"Now there I don't agree with you," he said. "I might have done so in 1914, but not to-day. You, as a reader of newspapers, must be aware of the decline in moral values which has taken place in our time. The world has swung back into the immoral atmosphere of, shall we say, Tudor times? The reign of Hitler has taught me a lot about the reign of Elizabeth. It has made the men and the actions of that time entirely credible and understandable. Our world has just emerged from a long and unusual period of law and order, and, as always in times of danger, politicians have become unscrupu-

lous, just as they were in Tudor times." He paused to light his pipe and went on:

"Danger produces fear, and fear produces unscrupulous-ness. Danger and uncertainty are two of the constant factors in human affairs. If you doubt that we are back in the men-tality of the Tudor Age, study the social background. The
Money Power was paramount, and the State was chained to it as it is to-day. The Elizabethan State, enriched by church lands, was financing commerce just as we are to-day. Money, and fear of Catholic Spain were two great factors in Eliza-bethan politics. Money and the fear of Nazi Germany are the great factors in England to-day.

"The execution of Mary Stuart was merely a swift and successful political move carried out by men very like modern politicians. Indeed, before I gave up reading the papers, I seem to remember that similar death sentences have been executed from precisely similar motives in modern Europe. It is true that the common people are shocked by them, probably because the common people of Europe are not yet as unscrupulous as their leaders. They are still living in the old-fashioned atmosphere of a more moral world. But their leaders are not. And history proves, if it proves anything at all, that a leader need not necessarily lead forward; he can just as easily lead backward. The only hope for the world, as I see it, is that the people of the world may remain suffi-ciently old-fashioned to refuse to be led backward. But who can tell?"

Rain began to fall, and we walked back in silence to the hotel.

Friday night hysteria: I went on some weird Waitrose buying spree. I must have gone in weak. I bought some roses, some posh tea and that reed diffuser which is making my room smell like Felicity Kendall. I only went in for a pizza.

In what seems like an unlikely turn of events, this room they're locked in, in the Death Star, seems to have very similar decor to the one in which I'm sitting watching the film. Do I have the same interior design tastes as Darth Vader?

I've just realised the hair was his disguise. Ignore the hair and the Potty Time presenter turns back into the military counter intelligence agent. First non SAS man to fire a gun in their "killing house" training facility. Loved Potty Time when I was little, though.

I use a Nothing Phone 4a Pro which I really like, but the camera software out of the box is shit. I suspect AI enhanced. The lighter pic here is shaper but looks like a toddler coloured it. The darker one is with Zerocam and app which promises to just take the picture the lens sees.
