that really IS a typical Berkeley story
Another excerpt:

"I am giving my last lecture today, on Brecht. On Friday the members of Venceremos, the Spanish SDS, will speak in class, and a new experiment to test hidden variables in QM [quantum mechanics] will be discussed in my philosophy of science class. And then all is over, and I shall be able to devote myself to AM fully. Incidentally, let me tell you a typical Berkeley story: a lady I know who is married and has a child, decided that she might be a lesbian, and that she should find out by some practical tests. So she talked it over with her husband, got permission, and set out to find a companion. Soon, another lady all clad in leather caught her attention. She followed her around, spied on her, discovered her address and one fine day knocked on her door for some discussion and, perhaps, a little lesbian sex. Well, she was cordially welcomed but, as it turned out, the leather lady was a man, and she is now living happily together with the leather man. Her original problem, however, remains unsolved. Is she a lesbian? The answer might be yes, for she followed what looked like a girl. No, for she followed what was a man. Yes, for she followed a man who wanted to be a girl. No, because she followed a man who wanted to be a girl but who still was very good in bed as a man. What is your answer? (Or perhaps I should introduce you to the lady when you come here?) [ . . . ]

Paul"

okay that's actually hilarious
Another excerpt, this time of a footnote:

"128. Feyerabend recalls: "Imre had bought the house for representational purposes. It contained a kitchen, bathrooms, a large sitting room, and Imre's library on the upper floor. Visitors were first shown the garden, then fed, and finally led upstairs for serious talk. I was often invited as an extra guest. I enjoyed the garden and the dinner but, anticipating the drift of the conversation [ . . . ] I remained in the kitchen and helped Gillian with the dishes. Some of the guests didn't know what to make of this. Men, especially scholars, were supposed to engage in debate, while dishes were the domain of women. `Don't worry,' said Imre; 'Paul's an anarchist"' (1995,129-30)."

topless form????
Another excerpt:

"January 1971

Dear Paul,

I smell a Sussex Chair in the air for you. After all, Roy Edgley may do some good. JWNW [Watkins] and I are telling everybody that you are the Greatest even though Roy thinks so too. Now: are you really interested?

I shall be in Los Angeles on Nov. 1st. Will Berkeley invite me to preach against Pope Paul?

I am so busy winding up my administrative affairs before leaving for Boston that I cannot prepare any arguments. But, unless my back gets very bad, you will get Lakatosian rhetoric in Topless Form. I wrote a song to Reason and I now need a girl to sing it. (A rhyme is still missing in the 7th line: what rhymes with "Paul Feyerabend"?)

John Watkins is ill. Latsis, the Rising Star, gives his lectures. Watch that man. Have you read his Situational Determinism (BJPS, Aug. 1972)? [ . . . ]

Love. Till soon,
Imre

I broke up with Gillian, and we are selling the house."

oh come ON this is CLEARLY gay
Another excerpt:

"17 October 1969
Berkeley

Dear Imre,

I see you are in the postcard stage. This I interpret to mean either that you are travelling or that you spend a great deal of your time in bed. Now the last postcard has Marsha on it too, so the latter interpretation seems to be the correct one am I wrong? If you still want to sink into the comfortable morass of married life, why not propose to her? Under the circumstances (assuming the circumstances are as I imagine them to be) this would seem to be the most rational action, so, why don't you act rationally for a change? Or do you want to wait until the next degenerating problem shift? And if that really is your attitude, should I then not point out to you that an action on your part now might eliminate degeneration forever? Anyway—let me know what is going on, in your brain, and in your lower parts."

okay regrettably I must admit this is kind of baller
Another excerpt:

"So, you are in a bad mood? And you think this is a sign of old age? Have you never seen little children in a bad mood? Stamping their feet and shouting? During the last two weeks I had to take tablets against pain almost every day and to the people who come to me and say "smoke pot" (there are lots of them), I can only smile and reply: "Ducky, I have been on the stronger stuff since before you were born," which earns me lots of respect."

Another excerpt:

"2 July 1969
Berkeley

Dear Imre,

I almost got a marvellous house up on the hills, with a large garden, and a separate room and a separate entrance for you. At the last minute I lost it, though I had quite a good lawyer looking after my interests (I was the highest bidder, but someone else had all the cash ready while I would have been forced to take a loan). So I am still looking and I might find another house before you come."

jesus CHRIST what the FUCK
Another excerpt. This one is very racist.

"[ . . . ] Here in Berkeley we now have tear-gas almost every day, the national guard has been moved here, windows on office doors (some right next to my office) have been smashed, a policeman has been beaten up, bombs explode during lectures, another fire has started, this time in Dwinelle Hall, and Reagan's popularity is at an all time high (78% now believe he does a good job mainly on the basis of what he says, on TV, about the students). In my classes I now only talk about the strike and you should hear my criticism. I think we both agree completely in our criticism of this lumpenbourgeoisie, however I think that the university is lousy, too, and must be reformed by giving the children a voice in the administration."

"The Black problem (which is mixed up with all the mess here) gets worse every day. Four times now I have seen Black militants and members of the American Nazi Party agree on TV panel discussions. Here in Berkeley the Blacks have nothing but contempt for the white radi-cals and only make use of them where they absolutely need them. Crying girls with Mao buttons come to me: "They don't want us." Violence has long ago spread beyond campus. A school board meeting in SF dealing with the problem of busing school children turned into a war only a few days ago, for the Whites (trade unions etc.) now start fighting back. We shall see."

Another excerpt:

"(5) Your Conclusion is incredibly rude and equally incredibly unin-teresting. It is an "orgy of name-calling, dogmatic pronouncements, in-ane lyricisms . . ." Scrap it. (Incidentally: "Back to Bohr"? Back to which of Bohr's ideas? Or back to his intellectual attitude? Or back to a higher appreciation of Bohr?) I am sorry, my dear Paul, for this letter. I don't know what the devil is driving you. This paper is subjective, emotional; its valuable material and very important arguments are submerged in irrelevant and, on many points, distorting anti-Popperianisms. You know how fond I am of you and how much I admire you; so I hope you will not be too angry for my Odd Remarks. For a reasoned appreciation of the whole essay, I am afraid you will have to wait. I am very slow.

Affectionately,

Another excerpt:

"Apropos lectures. I think I was a little impolite not to talk to the lady—the blond Helena—who was supposed to be my assistant. Can you point out to her that this was not due to rudeness but simply to the inconveniences caused by a very strong attraction (inconveniences: because she is married). And I would really like to know what she [continued on next page]"

Another excerpt:

"In some way you are much better off than I and I envy you for it. You believe in something such as the truth, you have some ideas how to reach it; and apart from minor fluctuations (such as the Carnap paper) you proceed steadily. Right now, I am lost, and it is largely your doing. Listening to your lectures on Popperianism meant the end of my dogmatic slumber. Now I am awake, and at first I don't see anything at all except that the reality I now imagine I am seeing has nothing whatever to do with the preceding Popperian dreams. It is of course an advantage to have been a Popperian. For the other philosophies are not only inadequate, they are also quite definitely sickening (having returned to Berkeley I just got a little inkling of how bad philosophy really can be). Still, I must admit that I am somehow lost and the best one can get in such a situation is criticism. So, can you let me have some criticism of what you heard in my lecture? What did you make of it? Was there anything in it? etc. etc."

Another excerpt:

"In 1827 Ampere, the founder of electromagnetism, published Theorie mathematique des phenomenes electrodynamiques (The Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamical Phenomena). The subtitle on the cover reads: Uniquement deduite de l'experience (In an unequivocal way deduced from experience). Ampere describes his experiments, the electro-magnetic theory, and shows how the theory was deduced from the experiments. The interesting thing is that in the second edition, as Duhem points out, there is a postscript in small print saying: "I think I ought to remark in finishing this memoir that I have not yet had the time to construct the instruments represented in Diagram 4 of the first plate and in Diagram 20 of the second plate. The experiments for which they were intended have not yet been done." Ampere obviously thought that if one wants to be a respectable scientist, one does not publish a theory which has not been deduced from experiments; so he drew all the diagrams until something went wrong. This happens many times when you have utopian standards of morality: in practice you end up in lies. If you have utopian standards of scientific appraisal, you also end up in lies."

Another book excerpt:

[continued from previous page] "Hungary, Lakatos delivered an impassioned speech at the Petofi Circle pedagogy meeting, in which he dealt with the problem of the education of a new generation of scholars. He argued in favour of talent, curiosity, original thinking, autonomy, the right to doubt and the right to dissent, demand for proofs, and respect for facts (see this volume, appendix A). One of the main features of Lakatos's attitude towards teaching was his effort to force students to criticise his own ideas. This is why his lectures are so openly provocative and also why many of his remarks on academics, philosophers, scholars, intellectuals, and politicians are outrageous, and intentionally so. Ernst Gellner remembers that Lakatos's lectures were "intelligible, fascinating, dramatic, and above all conspicuously amusing even for non-specialists" (The Times, 8 February 1974). John Watkins recalls that when Lakatos lectured, "the room [was] crowded, the atmosphere electric, and from time to time there would be a gale of laughter" ("Lakatos Obituary," The Times, 6 February 1974)."

a brutal counterpoint, this Hungarian's got hands
Another book excerpt:

"Imre: Your position is just a colourful version of Pyrrhonian scepticism. You should look at the excellent book by Dick Popkin: The History of Scepticism. From a sceptic's point of view, scientific theories are a set of beliefs which have equal epistemological ranking to so many other sets of beliefs. There may be change in belief systems but no progress. It follows that any system is free to grow and influence any other; but none can claim epistemological superiority. You deny any possibility of producing any theory of appraisal whatsoever. Your only piece of advice is: do your own thing. This is your only code of intellectual honesty."

my bisexuality extends exclusively to men who are capable of talking about me like this:
Another photo of a page from the book:

"Paul: The truth, whatever it is, be damned. Play, fun, and fiction will make you free. Someone who laughs looks intelligent (much more so than someone who explains her 'profound convictions'). She seems magically lifted out of the sea of fear, poverty, and egoism into which fate threw her and in which she is kept by the 'truth'. What we need is to take things lightly. Were I to choose an auspicious image for the new millennium, I would choose this one: the sudden agile leap of the philosopher who raises himself above the weight of the world, showing that with all his gravity he has the secret of lightness. (Of course, I would be talking about the lightness of thoughtfulness rather than the lightness of frivolity. In fact, the thoughtful kind of lightness can make frivolity seem dull and heavy.) You have a gift for laughter, even where your own position is concerned; thus for me you are a good guy."

writing technical documentation like it's a teaser trailer
A screenshot of some documentation I wrote for Resyntax. It reads:

"4.5 Expansion Analyzers"

"An expansion analyzer examines the fully expanded form of a program and reports facts about it as a syntax property bundle whose syntax paths refer to subforms of the expanded program. Resyntax translates those paths back to the corresponding subforms of the original unexpanded program and attaches the reported properties to them, making information that is only discoverable after macro expansion available to refactoring rules. Expansion analyzers are an as-yet undocumented work in progress; a future edition of this grimoire will describe them properly."
