The entire jstor specimen ecosystem is a bit bizarre to me. As for GBIF records, I was thinking if smth like PlutoF can be used to digest from GBIF on demand->annotate->publish back as a separate dataset with original records linked. The question is for how long originals will exist (The Horrors).

I was thinking about it a lot. One-off DB/dataset is possible, but is a half-measure. It has to hit the sweet spot between stability and dynamics, something like bionomia but for types...

Science will always appear to be in a crisis if we insist on comparing it to an ideal that has never existed and can never exist. It is delusional to claim that science cannot produce useful knowledge unless it matches a confabulation made up by those who refuse to understand it as a social process.

we see this a lot in biology too, but then generating high-quality raw data often has even less glamor than schlepping existing data.)

hmm, bogs are literal carbon sinks, so lets breed saltwater-tolerant sphagnum and turn oceans into endless diamond bogs (rip corals, that's a downside)

Made me thinking that DNA being text brings a whole range of implications from amusing to scary, but one thing that I can bet is happening right now is paper mills using LLMs to generate plausible-looking, but completely fake DNA sequences littering public DBs the same way LLM text litters the web.

I feel that reliance of conservation on species names is an fundamental, and very useful for business and politics, flaw in the framework of conservation. But the best is the enemy of the good, I guess...

People in urban ecology use this kind of data a lot, to get as close to a controlled city-wide experiment as one can get. Rich administrations often sit on a lot of non-public data like this, e.g., super high-res aerial imagery.

I like bibliomanagers' interfaces more than anything I see in the web because of the wealth of bibliographic info they can show. Also many websites have a hard entry point (no other way to start but to write smth in a searchbar) - would be nice to combine it w/ browsing tools.

True. Just noting that (b) is rarely an obligation. At this point, selling business to a large corpo is such a reliable way to spoil it, that doing so basically means "We are ready to see our product being gutted".

RGB values were then automatically translated into color names, which fell rather nicely into color categories assigned subjectively by eye. Unsurprisingly, most of the failed extracts were dark-colored (and also old!), though ~half of dark extracts performed just fine in PCR and sequencing.

Machine vision for poor people, or yet another way to misuse Quantum GIS! I wanted to know if color of DNA extract correlates with sequencing success, and to get the colors I imported a photo of extracts into QGIS as if it was a map, placed sample points, and measured their underlying RGB values.
