Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 22/10/2025From a Stuff article on tomorrow's strikes in the public sector. The mood of those against industrial action seems to be annoyance more than anything, but the mood for it seems to be orders of magnitude more resolute. #nzpol 072 7

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 16/10/2025I will also be hosting this in conversation with the rad @rosieoverell.bsky.social at the end of the month! Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 16/10/2025I will be involved with this & DJing alongside some great local talent. Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025The Internet (TM) has largely been a negative factor in the unrest which has broken out, though. I think most people who saw the revolutionary potential of 'information war' during the 2000s and capped off by Arab Spring with some embarrassment now. 100 1
Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025That's true of the uprisings of the 2010s and 2020s, but with a few exceptions the uprisings of the 2000s also seemed to largely fail to even attempt a full political or social revolution. There's a declining ratio post-Cold War afaict of uprisings turning into some kind of revolutionary upheaval. 200 2

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025One of the keys to the early 21st century which we can now analyse with a bit of hindsight is the proliferation of successful political revolutions and coups which promised at least a nominally progressive overhaul but failed to really carry out social or political revolution in a meaningful sense. 100 1
Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025Consider my reposting an endorsement of this fundraiser, Byron is great quality as a person and as a researcher of what I used to call the "lunar right" in Aotearoa (a now useless term given how close the glassy eyed moonbats are to people with actual levers of power available) 020 2

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025Oh, last up for real this time, I will be presenting a paper with the provisional title "Small-Town Socialism: On Researching the Politics of Socialism and Radical Left-Wing Politics in Aotearoa" at the annual NZ Political Studies Association conference in November. Keep an eye on that! (10) 210 2
Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025With all three, I recognise the limitations, and consider them "best of the bad options" amidst the deterioration of the social internet and its consolidation by a small coterie of extremely stupid and venal tech vampires. Mercifully, more of my work is published physically these days anyway. (9) 100 1
Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025On top of these, I'm mulling over making it possible to make donations for my work. Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025Last up, I will be setting about getting my currently dormant substack account into fit shape to cross-post the remaining writing I do for my blog. Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 14/10/2025Black Star Books was a long running anarchist infoshop here in #Ōtepoti, which managed an impressive 20 years in operation (with a few inactive periods) from 2003 to 2023. The remaining collective members, myself included, decided to wind things up this year. 100 1

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 09/10/2025It's an extant problem in Australia, burn season shakes out a few firebugs who invariably take the blame in conservative outlets to downplay everything from climate change to public underfunding of relevant services (emergency, enviro management, planning, etc) 020 2

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 07/10/2025This one's largely for @historyiswhat.bsky.social's interest, a 1992 issue of Aotearoa anarchist periodical The State Adversary taking up the cause of the *now* (33 years later) recently released Leonard Peltier. No idea if anything else came of this, but an interesting footnote nonetheless. 142 4

Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 07/10/2025My only contribution to the current #nzpol discourse is this photo of an anarchist demonstration at Jenny Shipley's house when she was the minister for social welfare in 1992. Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 02/10/2025I mean, after Tākuta Ferris started posting about how "Blacks" (his word, not mine) among others shouldn't even be allowed to *campaign* in a Māori seat election, I'd be a bit circumspect about the closeness of ongoing association as well. I can't imagine it helped, at any rate. 010 1
Notes South from Nowhere @notesnowhere.bsky.social · 01/10/2025Okay, seeing as the wave of industrial actions in late October is set for the 23rd, maybe this will wind up being more of a postscript to that. Still, two major, nationwide union actions in a week (both pretty explicitly aimed at the govt on political grounds) is more than anticipated. 010 1
