When I spotted these flowers on the shore of Isla Carmen, I did a double take. They looked like hibiscus, which I associate with the South Pacific...not on a sun-baked island in the Sea of Cortez. But this is the San Marcos hibiscus, evolved to thrive among salt spray and months without rain.

This monkey hopper, species Eumastax vittata, from the Ecuadorian Amazon, is one of the most vibrantly colored creatures on Earth. Photography is often a little bit of luck, and I just had a few seconds to capture this jewel. One of my favorite photos of all time. #photography

My least favorite European tradition: arriving at a beautiful beach only to find it covered in rows of rental loungers. Oregon gets it right. Every beach is public, with miles of open sand instead of reserved umbrellas. #sicily

I just updated my Hawaiian Islands map page with two new maps. They replace an older watercolor map and hopefully depict the islands better than I did before. As far as I know, there is no map of the full archipelago online that names (almost all) the rocks, islets, atolls and pinnacles.
