You'd definitely have goal congruence between the union and management.

Transition to employee ownership. Since it is apparently not a going concern, liquidation valuation. Solves everyone's problems, including conservatives fond of slogans like "the government shouldn't be making steel". Algoma Steel, also in Ontario, I believe went through this.

Russia has a name for neighbors that aren’t supposed to have their own foreign policy: the Near Abroad. It’s a wonderfully dialectical term, each half negating the other to create an imperial synthesis that treats sovereignty as a plaything of the Russian imagination. new post

Car has automated locks, encrypted engine immobilizer, klaxon that goes off if theft is attempted. I religiously press the lock button when I park, just like a paranoid maniac, the only difference really being that the paranoid measures on the car are transparent. The perception is all in my mind.

It was bewildering until I realized that the people pulling the strings don't understand the breadth, depth and effectiveness of the soft power they wield(ed). When you value that at zero, falling back to oppressive feudalism makes a kind of sense.

I use the cafe lock, an angle grinder resistant u bolt, and a max strength chain (and sometimes a cable for fun). Maybe 600 dollars in locks. I do feel like I look like a paranoid maniac when I lock it up, but did lose a (normal) bike a year when I lived in Toronto.

You raise an excellent point. We should probably staff a team to work on specifically boosting engagement. 10-30 people, tops. In addition to the team already doing this. Sorry to that biology prof who needed that new lab equipment, times are tight.

Prof Fairie, you do great deep dives, have there been weirder referendum questions before? Personally can't believe some of these are being put to referendum. Or that there are 10. Or that they could all basically be replaced with "do you want to swear at Ottawa?"

Apart from one player and associated fossil capital, suspect we're probably firmly on the downhill run towards non-carbon energy. Not at all qualified to judge my feeling nor the science, personally. Do worry about how 30 years ago, needed to scrape headlights. It is profoundly, subtly, disturbing.

I always like to socialize when it comes up that Canada was "the second-largest producer in the world between 1918 and 1923 and third-largest after World War II." We did not "steal a bunch of jobs" since NAFTA, and both countries were hit by offshoring.

Apparently it is news to people that companies can quickly create profiles about you and the people you interact with using generative AI. If you use Gmail, you can see an example by asking Gemini to summarize some of your contacts.
Gemini chat:
Can you summarize Jimmy Wales from my emails?

Based on your email correspondence, Jimmy Wales is the founder of Wikipedia. He frequently communicates with you on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation-the nonprofit organization that hosts Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects-to request donations to keep the site independent, free, and ad-free. In his emails, he emphasizes the importance of Wikipedia as a trustworthy and reliable source of knowledge, often highlighting that it is sustained by contributions from readers rather than corporate funding or advertisements.

Would you like me to find the most recent email from him regarding your donation status?

The example I use is driving from Bayshore to Orleans in Ottawa on city streets not the highway. It is basically the entire width of the city. It is about 30km. At 50km/h, that is 36 minutes and at 60km/h it is 30. The 6 minutes are not worth the risk, IMHO.
From a paper by Pasenen E, 1991. An S shaped curve of probability of death on the y axis, impact speed on the x axis. The curve slopes up dramatically past 40kmh and levels off close to 100% at 60kmh and appears to reach nearly 100% by about 70kmh.

It's encouraging. Most people really don't intuit how little time is saved. If you are doing 20% over on a Montreal to Vancouver road trip, you save a small amount of time but it's pointless and exceedingly dangerous in town.

Had some success doing back of the napkin math on speeding in 50kmh or less city streets with people. I'll take a legit commute or IKEA trip they make, and we work out the minutes saved (maybe a couple). Then go over stopping distances at various speeds, finish with a kid chasing ball scenario.

Honestly I thought that was the original woke. There was a Huddie Ledbetter song about the Scottsboro boys from the 30s or 40s about staying woke. It stuck with me because of the horror of the situation.

Fifty minutes on the phone to get Internet, TV, phone cancelled for a relative who had moved to end of life care was really absurd. They had to proceed through a script of "how was our service lacking"? It was lacking in not having a "death imminent, please stop charging me" option.

I have found everyone is so exploited and overworked these days, things are falling apart. We're annoyed when it's a refund for a cancelled train, but it is creeping into even more important things. Helping an elderly relative with memory issues who lost all their ID was brutal.

Pref. Gunitsky, I'm an optimist; maybe some far off day artificial intelligence can be the force that marshals the worst aspects of human behaviour constructively. Say, towards knowledge and away from sending thousands to die for a square metre of land in a universe where land is not really rare.
