Anyone have book recommendations for a strong reader 9yo who is looking for preferably funny non-fiction books (I'd take novel recs, too)? He likes graphic novels and mostly reads those, but he's reluctant to try new things. He really enjoyed the What If books, for comparison.

I'm reading the last book of the Stormlight Archives and none of the people I know I've gotten to start reading it are as far as I am (not to book 4 yet) and I'm going insane not being able to talk to people about it.

I've been carpeting my house, and before I carpeted the stairs, I screwed down the squeaky boards and now the stairs are completely silent and I'm torn between "OMG we don't get woken up every time someone walks on the stairs" and "now the ninjas can sneak in."

I have a job interview which is great because my job security is so low I've been kind of freaking out and they've basically told me they can't actually hire me full time (which we've been working toward for 3 years) anymore because of budget cuts, but also sad because I LOVE my job.

So many years ago I started writing a book about a somewhat political topic (dealing with taking down corrupt politicians) and then Trump happened and the story didn't work anymore because it became clear that we no longer had standards. 45k words down the drain.

So this semester, I've had two papers I expect were AI generated, and interestingly, both of them were the lowest grades I've given so far because of a lack of support for the arguments. This doesn't automatically mean it's AI, but I suspect it for other reasons. I just find this interesting.

I ran a 5k today and sucked. 😂I just had no energy and every step was a fight. I run 3 times a week lately (2 miles each time) and man was today a slog. My time was almost exactly what it was in the fall. I had really hoped to have cut 5-10 minutes off it.

I should be able to give Good Omens to my 5th grader, right? She's read some other Pratchett books, and I think she'd enjoy it. I don't remember anything questionable for that age and she has the reading level for it, but it's been awhile since I've read it.

I'm going to write more short fiction. I have an issue of getting swamped with work and having to take breaks from longer fiction because I need to be writing regularly to keep my head in the voice, but I want to be writing.

I had a carpet delivered today and the guy brought his dog. When I was in the store, I threw a ball for the dog, and he decided I was his best friend. That was three weeks ago, and I swear that dog remembered me. As soon as he saw me he jumped over his owners lap to stick his head out the window.

University is bowing down to lawmaker threats and removing DEI language. Says the courses won't change, we just have to not mention it. The problem, though, is that this makes it seem unimportant. It makes it seem that diversity isn't a strength to be treasured.

Had one of those moments earlier when I was thinking about the story I'm working on which is going to end up way short, and how I needed to figure out how to add in a major subplot to beef it up, and all the sudden I realized a super easy idea that I can't believe didn't occur to me before.

I have a job interview, and on one hand it's great because my current job is super at risk and I'll be lucky to be able to keep it for a year, and on the other hand I'm super sad because I love my job and the flexibility of it and I'll basically never be home with my family anymore and that sucks.

It's funny, most of the time I can't watch things like The Walking Dead because it's too depressing. But I go through a periodic, "I need to watch a zombie show where people kick some apocalyptic ass" phase and binge watch a bunch. Watching Daryl Dixon for the first time and liking it so far.

My dog doesn't have an undercoat and gets really cold, and so I have jackets for her to wear in cold weather even just to go out to potty because she's cold even just in the house. She haaaates them and is an absolute drama queen about it. But without them she's so cold.

We've been rewatching Ladybug, and even though there's a lot of silly stuff around the relationship there, I've got to say it's one of the best depictions of healthy relationships and boundaries I've seen, especially Cat Noir.

We need legislation and regulation on AI. Prominent, non-removable watermarks, for example. I'd even like to see requirements that AI cannot be trained on work without compensation and any AI that has been trained has to be shut down. Companies should also be held accountable for consequences.

I just got a notification that a contest I had entered has delayed their results because they had 5 times the normal number of submissions this year. I think it's fair to say AI is definitely impacting things here. That number is shocking.

One of the things I picked up when I lived in Japan was the yearly "big cleaning" that you do before New Years. I'm doing it a few days late, but over the next couple of days I'm basically doing all the heavy duty deep cleaning and it's so nice to have it all done to start the year.

My 10yo (almost 11) really wants to go see Wicked 2. I haven't seen the musical or the movie, but I've heard it's iffy for kids. That said a lot of her friends have been to see it. Is there anything I should particularly be aware of to decide this? I'm leaning to taking her.

I've been rewatching an anime that I know has human produced subtitles. But because the streaming service has agreed to use AI auto generated ones instead, they are now frequently incomprehensible. For me, it's just annoying. But what if I was deaf and *needed* the captions? Now they suck.

I sometimes wonder if particularly onerous submission guidelines are particularly onerous on purpose. Like to discourage submissions, or to weed out people who don't follow them. It could be completely unrelated, but it's something I wonder about.

I will say this: I might have a lot of students who haven't turned in papers yet, but of the ones who did, only one did something that I suspect was AI, and that one referenced what we did in class enough that I know the student at least had some hand in it. I'm considering this a win.
