You're absolutely right, but I still think that even the process of having to defend himself would gall him to no end. Being the president avoids that completely. I'm not in his head (thankfully), but I'd be surprised if he voluntarily leaves the presidency.

Yes, he would. But if Trump is no longer president, state prosecutions can start or continue. I'd be shocked if he didn't commit state crimes during his crime spree. Some states will prosecute. I really feel that he needs to be president to stay out of legal peril.
