Realistically, I think you're massively overstating the downside of this resignation. A neutered institution is a way of consuming the energy of an activist who could use that energy productively. There's an opportunity cost in remaining, too.

This is, at least titularly, the language institutions speak. I'm not going to pretend I think this institution cares about historical norms. Historical norms are for people with power, not people like us. But I'm also not going to get in the way of a diversity of tactics.

Resignation is the traditional language of institutional protest. It attacks the legitimacy of an institution. It falls to the rest of us to use the symbolic power of an act like that to force change. Like most liberal politics, it's not a good way of doing things, but... We're kinda trapped here.
