Norwich cathedral cloisters are beautiful and full of ceiling bosses like these. They have a table with a mirrored top on wheels so you can move it around and look at them without craning your neck.

If they read the Bible they would know that they are not following the explicit teachings of Jesus who promoted loving your neighbour as yourself and helping strangers. Parable of the Good Samaritan anyone?

The language they are using is seriously frightening and reminiscent of the 1930s

Whatever happened to quicksand? Seemed to be a threat to life constantly on TV when I was a child!

What about the ones in the 70s that were really rather racist? Like “Love Thy Neighbour” and “Mind Your Language”?

It’s shown him up as a thin skinned, entitled, egotistical grifter to some more people who hadn’t yet realised it.

I daren’t look. That 1970s adaptation I saw as a child has really scarred me for life.

It doesn’t surprise me in the least! You had to eat with a very open mind in Japan I found. But it was often rewarding.

A few years ago we had a holiday with friends in Japan. I enjoyed the food but you often never knew what it was. One morning in a ryokan near Kyoto my friend said “whatever it is, I’m not eating it.” So I know what you mean.

Not sure I will ever finish. Meant to say I will probably read it in English alongside following reading the article.

After a couple of false starts I have just restarted Proust - but in French. I’ll be doing it piecemeal and am just through Combray I. Thanks to your post I may just do that - and I feel less lonely in my undertaking!

There are a load of Reggie Perrin references I must be hated for. The top one is “I didn’t get where I am today by…”. I work with far too many young people for this to land in any way other than pompously.

Paris and Moscow have nights when museums are open for their entirety. And other places too, judging from the replies on here. There is hope after all!

As long as you had a few key quotes to throw in and a decent and logical response to the question, a passable essay was assured!

This is just hilarious stuff. When’s the actual by-election? Can we string it out to have more time to enjoy the spectacle of Farage up against the evil elitist establishment candidate, Count Binface? On the other hand, I might die laughing

How was it that they split the Lord of the Rings, an absolute door stop of a book, into 3 films and left out a lot of good parts (Tom Bombadil anyone?) and then filmed The Hobbit, a slim novella in comparison, in the same format?

So it's now 10 years since the vote to leave the EU. For a detailed account and analysis of what happened from the day after that, see my book, "Brexit Unfolded: How no one got what they wanted (and why they were never going to)": www.bitebackpublishing.com/books/brexit...

I agree totally and imho this was part of the problem. Because it was so ill defined, everyone could project their own fantasies upon it, and that meant no one “got what they were voting for”

Banter is often just an excuse for being racist, sexist or homophobic. And if you complain about it the riposte is “can’t you take a joke?”

Is it as hot in Paris as it is in London? (29 degrees). I always remember it as being slightly hotter there.

Sometimes I don’t think people want to understand the facts. They just want something convenient to be outraged about.

Absolutely. We have had panics about all sorts of things. Before smart phones it was video nasties. Before those it was violent films. Before those it was sexual activities depicted in novels and hit records that referred to parts of the anatomy. Before that, TV….

I love modernist and even brutalist architecture. If I won the lottery I’d buy a flat in the Barbican. Le Corbusier’s idea of a house as “a machine for living” is still true I think. The idea that we have to dress it up in Georgian style is just a yearning for “our glorious past” in my opinion.
