We went full Swiftie for this pre-election issue, seeking to avoid the usual
partisan rancor that ﬁlls our social media feeds in the ﬁnal weeks of cam-
paign season. We ﬁgured, when we drafted our Note back in June, that if we must be
divided, better to be divided over the reigning queens of pop music rather than the
two men who were then vying for the highest ofﬁce in the nation. Polling showed that
the vast majority of American voters were deeply dissatisﬁed with both candidates,
but in June it seemed one of them was going to be re-elected President of a deeply
divided country.
“Blank Space” seemed an apt description of that moment. “So it’s gonna be for-
ever; Or it’s gonna go down in ﬂames”—lyrics that hit differently as a commentary on
an election featuring a choice between Biden and Trump—“You can tell me when it’s
over: If the high was worth the pain.” Swift registers the horror of romantic love: either
it’s eternal…
