It’s setting a scene both physically and thematically for the case. But like, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect the students to remark unprompted on how it specifically lingers on the naval aspect of the paragraph as they seem to.

I will say there were some times the study authors criticized students for over-summarization, and, like, yeah the point of that part is that it’s foggy. There’s beautiful imagery and symbolism, but if you’re not promoted to analyze it it’s a bit unreasonable to expect with the study design.

Actually they could use their phone to look things up iirc.

They had access to a dictionary. And These are English majors!

I have to wonder if the lack of exit exams in US schools really harms us here. This really is a text I would expect to be read by any high school graduate.

It certainly seems like our current approach is allowing the fascist billionaires to walk all over us.

There’s no reason the Dems can’t propose to nationalize it.

Perhaps this can be salvaged by at least requiring these hunting clubs to get some kind of license that would then allow the invocation of the administrative search exemption, but even then this leaves animals that happen to be on someone's personal land effectively defenseless against lawlessness.

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Seems to me to be a bad decision. There should not be a reasonable expectation of privacy for hunting wildlife that, under the North American Model, is a public trust. It effectively makes the enforcement of game laws impossible as long as clubs can keep their mouths shut.

“The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honoured and looked up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage labourers.”

“The bourgeoisie, […] has left remaining no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous “cash payment”. It has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of religious fervour, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine sentimentalism, in the icy water of egotistical calculation.”

This is wrong, I think. Kautsky was not a renegade, then he was. He was a Marxist, then he wasn’t. Applying some sort of “once saved, always saved” logic is to ignore the real task of Marxist-Leninists in continuous political development.

Kinda like how we send people on insulin home with glucagon for hypoglycemia.

It’s standard practice now to prescribe naloxone with many opioid prescriptions.

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Also I think the attack on abortion rights has polarized physicians a lot against these kinds of care restrictions.

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I also know quite a few trans docs and med students.
020
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
And generally speaking it’s policy of primary care organizations like our organization of family medicine doctors (essentially GPs) that they can and should do GAC.
010
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I think this experience plays a big role in medical training now, yeah. I’ve never met a physician who didn’t have incandescent rage at insurance companies. That plus HRT being, again, really freaking easy compared to most of what primary care docs do…
110
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
That’s how things used to be here, even when I transitioned. Now though It’s a standard part of the med school curriculum and most primary care docs will supervise and initiate it in states where there’s not a government attack on it.
130
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Not just in trans issues, I think the proletarianization of doctors in general and their hatred of insurance companies, plus a broad pushback against pseudoscience has pushed them significantly to the left. And the thing about trans care is that it’s really simple and easy as medicine goes.
110
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Honestly, as a trans person in the medical profession…things are shockingly progressive on trans issues. GAC is a standard part of the curriculum, most primary care docs I’ve met do HRT. I think this was true but there’s been a sea change in the last couple decades.

Meanwhile, Norway going next level with *spelling* being the fault line.

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
It also feels somewhat random which countries have relatively tame language politics despite significant linguistic diversity (India, the Philippines, Switzerland) while others have it as the single greatest fault line.

Who were the beneficiaries of all the concessions to Quebec before the QR? In the Supreme Court etc. was it a small but still francophone comprador elite?
110
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Language politics fries my brain and this is another example. It’s just something I have no frame of reference for.
130
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
It’s interesting that the similar anti-clerical movement in Ireland didn’t result in similar language policy. It just feels like I never see what that bigotry actually looked like in accounts of the QR. It basically goes “laicite plus hydropower”

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Where does the language stuff come in?
120
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
So to use some leftist vernacular, the government pre-Quiet Revolution were the comprador bourgeoisie and the language point is an expression of opposition to that? At least in the part where it is relevant to the QR.

Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I suspect this is me being an ignorant American, but wouldn’t an anglophone experience the same thing under the French language laws in Quebec?
300
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
But I guess this story seems to be mostly be about the church which was Francophone.
000
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I think there’s an interesting parallel here in that Ireland’s de-Catholicization came with a further collapse in the use of Irish. Also interesting that Italy has the same rule about last names.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Like where does language politics fit into this story? It seems like Quebecois political life was in French before and French after.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Like the story to me goes something like “Quebec was very religiously conservative, then they ousted the church and nationalized the dams” and then it jumps to “and this is the source of every language anxiety in Canadian politics for the last half century.”
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Also, like, would it be possible now?
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Yeah I knew the last part, what confuses me is how that related with bilingualism given that the Church was obviously a French language institution.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I imagine the answer to this question was “no” before the Quiet Revolution, but to be frank I still have difficulty understanding why it was so transformative.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Would it be possible for someone in Quebec to become a doctor while remaining monolingual?
200
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I suppose it’s the kind of thing that’s hard to understand without a personal reference point, but for some reason I find it much harder than even similar things in other countries. It makes me feel like my understanding of Canadian politics is very limited.
010
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I still don’t really understand the Quiet Revolution no matter how much I read I on it. But I think a lot of Americans, even ones who are relatively educated, have never heard of it.
240
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Essentially this.
010
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I think there’s something to these kind of things, much like sensitive topics around racism in America, that’s fundamentally hard to grasp as an outsider and I try to keep that in mind when looking at Canada.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
I honestly struggle to understand it coming from America. My vague idea is that there’s no real threat to the French language in Quebec now but that a lot of historical anxieties from especially the 60s and before get played on?

Ebert made it his mission to make SPD a normal republican party, as opposed to a revolutionary one, and he succeeded!
000
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
The reality is that any real anti-liberal capitalist energy in the SPD fled the party for the KPD starting in 1918-1919 and was completely exhausted after the reichsexecution in Saxony in 1923.
100
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
I think the other thing that confuses people is that social democrats were *in theory* very far from liberals, while *in practice* Ebert’s SPD and beyond were liberal parties that liked welfare much as they claimed to be the true heirs of Marxism for electoral reasons.
111
Northeastern Blot @northeasternblot.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
The largest party for most of Weimar history was SPD, and they made a massive hay about their support for the republic. Heck, their paramilitary’s name was a reference to the Republic’s flag and to the coalition that supported it!

I saw my first Pileated after a somewhat difficult day of birding, I was walking out of the park with headphones in and heard a loud banging over my music. Lo and behold, a Pileated was making his way up the tree to my left.

I swear this turns a lot of people away from leftist politics too when they realize that a lot of it is just like their meetings at church, carrying folding chairs and tables to another committee meeting. I sometimes joke that I wonder how many chairs Lenin had to set up.

It’s hard not to see the Weimar Coalition and Ebert’s tenure as President as the high point of pre-war German liberalism. And even later, Brüning’s economic approach was recognizably liberal, even if the use of Article 48 was not.
