#workshop cladding done! Looks the finished article now - what do people think? Also now I'm close to the end curious if others had a space like this what would you use it for? #woodworking #shed #build
Workshop front cladded with cement fibre board. This stuff is a pain to cut.

Door and window in today. Still lots to do before it's finished but feels good to get this far. #shed #build #workshop

Bought a gift card from a local book shop today for my wife's birthday and it's made from wood. Found that mildly interesting 🪵

After uploading my YouTube video on the workshop dwarf wall one of the questions none of my 8 subscribers asked was hows that going to be attached to the timber walls? Well here's the answer anyway... Big galvanised L bracket, 80mm concrete bolt and a few stainless screws.
Galvanised L bracket tied down to the foundation slab. Then at the top screwed into the timber walls. OSB was cut away where we attach to leave a more flush finish for plasterboard to go over later.80mm concrete bolt as the foundation slab it 100mm and I don't want to go though the DPM on the bottom. 3 40mm stainless screws to attach the bracket to the wall. And a masonry bit taped at 80mm with blue tape so I don't drill too deep into the slab.

Just uploaded a new video on my workshop build. If you've been watching updates on bluesky this is going back in time as it takes me a while to put the videos together so hope you like them 😅 youtu.be/7ciUH6tn53k?...

First furniture purchase for the workshop. Nice to have somewhere to sit. Take a good look as this is the best condition this chair will ever be in. Also still on the hunt for a very used leather armchair on gumtree for when I want to sit but not scoot about on wheels.

#workshop #build progress. This week got roof OSB up, wall insulation, breathable membrane, soffits & fascias and laid rubber roof. Letting the creases flatten out a bit before I glue it down tomorrow. Minus the massive holes for the door and window the #shed is water tight now. #woodworking
Front view of the workshop. Walls insulated and wrapped in a breathable membrane. The membrane is just attached using a staple gun. White soffits and fascias around the roof. And rubber laid over the top still to be glued down.Front and back soffits have vents to allow air to pass through the roof above where insulation will be. This will let any moisture that gets there make its way out. I went for white soffits and fascias after finding out the anthracite grey ones I was originally going to get are massively more expensive.Side soffits don't have vents. The gaps where soffits meet will be covered with joining caps to hide the gaps.Inside we can see the OSB deck which is tongue and groove glued together with external wood glue.

Big progress on the #workshop #build today. Walls and roof joists went up. Quick progress thanks to my dad coming over for the day to add a pair of hands and big mitre saw for the roof joists. #woodworking

One side wall up, back wall built but needs to be lifted into place (waiting for some extra hands as it's heavy) and started on second side wall now. #shed #build is progressing well and can really get a sense of the size now 😁

DPC added and joined to DPM. This is attempt 2 as I started by just using DPM tape but it wasn't holding all too well. There's now 50mm double sided butyl tape holding it together and all weather gorilla tape to tidy up the joins. This is 1000 times better!
Shot of the finished dwarf wall complete with DPC.DPC wraps around the top and back of the wall then joined to DPM that goes under it and around the concrete slab.A picture of the join between the DPM and DPC. I used double sided butyl tape and gorilla all weather tape to get a solid waterproof join.

Finished laying bricks for the workshop base. Will do the DPC tomorrow as it's still a bit windy today for that 💨 Then of to the builders merchants and ordering the wood for the walls and roof 😁
2 courses of brick make the dwarf wall the workshop walls will be built on. There's a gap to the right where the door will go. A look down the side where the DPC has already been put on. The DPM under the concrete slab wraps up the slabs side, under the bricks and joins to the DPC which continues to the top of the dwarf wall.

Got up to something a bit different yesterday and had a day sail on the Williams II out of Blyth. Great feeling being back out on the water. #sailing #tallship #woodenboat

Posted a workshop foundations video before but that was a quick and dirty time lapse. I'm working on a more polished #youtube build series & wanted to share since the foundations video was added yesterday and it goes into more detail. Here's the playlist so far. youtube.com/playlist?lis...

So I was made redundant yesterday and have 3 month gardening leave. That means today there's workshop build progress so silver lining 😅 First time laying bricks so slow a process for me. There will be 2 courses of these that the rest of the timber structure will be built on. #shed #diy

Foundations done! I am chuffed.
Freshly poured foundations. A conduit with armoured cables comes up through the bottom left corner to later power the workshop.

Digger did some digging, hardcore compacted down, framing for concrete made and now just getting the DPM down. Busy day and tomorrow the foundations get poured. #shed #builds #workshop
Mini digger used to go down 20cm in preparation for concert slab.10cm compacted hardcore. This is so the slab we put in is on something solid that won't move. Then 10cm frame built where the concrete slab will be poured into.Rolling out the DPM which will wrap around the foundations slab. Need to leave enough overhang as we'll wrap it up and around the dwarf wall that will go onto the foundations.

Back fence fixed, marked foot-print out and dug electric conduit trench. Tomorrow will be exciting as the workshop build properly starts. 1st step is the foundations and will post updates as it gets done. Been quite a bit of prep work so giddy the build is starting! #diy #woodworking #builds
New fence replaced the old wobbly fence. Used concrete gravel boards as next doors ground level is 30cm higher. This stops the wood being in contact with the soil which caused the last fence posts to rot.Yellow lines mark out where the workshop will go. The inner box is the workshop at 470x350cm. The outer lines make what will be a 50cm gravel border.Conduit in a 45cm trench to be buried. It already has an armoured cable inside to give the workshop power. The conduit allows other cables to be ran at a later date such as ethernet for internet.

Nut fell off my wheelbarrow wheel and god only knows where its ended up. Bit of electrical tape + mole grip and with this dirty hack I'm back in business 😅 Knowing me this will be more permanent than it really should. #tool #hack
Wheelbarrow wheel held on with a mole grip and some tape

First time figuring out #timelapse on my camera. Here's ~40min of me breaking up concrete in 48 seconds. Started yesterday with just the sledgehammer and today with the SDS. I'm a fan of those who perfected the art of #handtools but this one is certainly a #powertools job for me 😅

#Shed #demolition progress from yesterday. It was a lovely day to be working outside ☀️ Still knackering work and had a well deserved beer and good sleep last night.
Old workshop feels a lot bigger and brighter without a roof.Roof off and big window out. That window was super heavy 🥵Under the shed is a patio on concrete. The paving slabs came up fairly easy and can probably be saved for another day.Starting to break up the concrete. Only got a little bit done and now all my limbs hurt.

The wife and toddler are visiting the in-laws this week so it's time to say goodbye to my old workshop and start pulling it down. It was here when we moved in 7 years ago. Not perfect but it's lasted until now.
Old shed from the outside. Tucked away at the back of the garden.Everything inside cleared out ready to be torn down The roof has seen better days.Kept most of the rain and plants out. Emphasis on "most". Also over the past years there's been more spiders than tools in here.

old.reddit.com/r/boatbuildi... Once I get my workshop built marine carpentry is something I would like to get into. Similar to this Reddit post I wonder if any #woodworking folk on bluesky have recommendations for #books that could apply to #boat #carpentry?
old.reddit.com
Any good books or other resources for learning marine cabinetry?
I will soon be selling my sailboat and getting a larger glass over marine ply boat with a pretty spartan interior. The boat is in great shape, but...

Had some feedback on my #workshop plans. I planned my foundations low to get the most internal ceiling height but didn't think about rain splash. Luckily since I'm cladding with composite materials and not wood it shouldn't be an issue but if you're planning a #workshop or #shed take note.
See how the lower cladding stays damp longer due to rain splash. This makes it more susceptible to rot!

Woodwork Joints: How They Are Set Out, How Made and Where Used. by William Fairham www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21531 Found this free (!) resource on Project Gutenberg via a StackOverflow link somewhere. It's a whole book with tons of illustrations on wood joinery. Amazing #woodworking
