We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of David Hockney. Normandy's skies, orchards and changing light inspired the artist in the final chapter of his remarkable life. Though he is gone, his vision remains woven into the landscapes he loved. Here in #Normandy, he will not be forgotten.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Native American veteran Charles Norman Shay. He was 101. Charles was a 19-year-old US Army medic when he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and helped save lives. He died at his home in Bretteville-L'Orgueilleuse, here in Normandy. 📷: D. Dumas

Exploring Normandy's Canadian Remembrance Route - a 4 day itinerary from Juno Beach to Dieppe
From landing on Juno Beach on D-Day to the fierce fighting to liberate Caen and Rouen and the decisive final battle to close the Falaise Gap, Canadians left an incredible legacy on French soil. Today, an official 400km memorial route has been created by the tourism boards of Normandy, Dieppe, Caen la Mer, and Lens to honour the sacrifices made by Canadian troops in France.

A Year in Normandy features iPad works with which British artist brought people comfort during Covid crisis In the spring of 2020, as the Covid-19 virus was “going mad”, David Hockney kept himself busy by painting winter trees bursting into blossom in his Normandy garden. “Many people said my drawings were a great respite from what was going on,” Britain’s pre-eminent living artist said at the time. Citizens of the post-pandemic world, with its rollercoaster of conflict, rightwing populism, climate crisis and techno-revolution, may still be in need of Hockney’s respite by next spring. On 19 August 1942, over 6,050 infantry set foot on Dieppe beach with high hopes. Unfortunately, none of the objectives set were met, and a total of 4800 soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured, with over 900 deaths among the Canadians alone. We remember them today and always. #LestWeForget
