Ok, you want to talk strategy? If transphobia becomes normalised in *both* parties, then it becomes an accepted part of culture that isn't twice as hard to push back on, it's 20x as hard. The framing sticks. It is not, in fact, in any way beneficial for affected minorities to give bigotry a pass.

*That*, unfortunately, seems rational. We are not going to get out of this mess by letting the same people who got us INTO it steer the ship, however. There is a hope of averting it getting worse, but we need to not cripple the people who have the passion to drive it.

That seems like the perfect set-up for sabotage-through-listening-to-incompetence and the Green party being pointless again. Kamala Harris/Walz in the US had a fire-breathing, popular campaign that was completely undercut and derailed by the Dem establishment "helping steer the ship from the back."

🚨 Last call for 5-y/o Mumbo Jumbo, now under kill command. Found in a park & brought in by police just 5 days ago. Healthy, wags for handler, has been on a walk. Super scared & stressed; you already know he will not get much time.

Maximillion's owner gave him up not because they didn't care about him, but because their own health prevented taking care of him. This is a gentle, trained, loving senior dog who was surrendered because the owner thought that someone would care for him, not for him to be killed.

And get this, the measures proposed as supposedly better than shutdown don't even seem to *include* "revamp every building for significantly better ventilation", & some of the measures like "targeted workplace shutdowns and contact tracing" literally cannot work in a pandemic at scale.

The study also ignored significant confounders regarding learning loss, too. Like, for example, the cognitive impact of having had repeat COVID infections *since* things opened up. Because that, too, is a thing with evidence behind it. But it's become verboten to acknowledge Covid as still serious.

AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
It comes across as more wildly callous, unrealistic about what worked and shrugging off the cost of human lives and health that would have resulted from *not* shutting down. Like, epidemics have existed in the past, and we did *learn* from them, and this just ignores all of it. For hypotheticals.

What absolute bullcrap. If Labour had got a 20% gain you would be crowing about the strength of its leadership. What you're doing is, as always, the attempt to undermine the perception a party overtaking the ones clinging to the status quo.
010
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
No, it was *realistic*. We did not "burn money" by closing schools. We did what was actually possible to do at the time, working within the limits of money expenditure, urgency!, and human psychology. We don't exist in an ideal world but lives still matter.

I mean, gets ignored unless it's to blame them for being a drain on the economy. Somehow the actual fault always seems to be on them for just not being robust enough rather than on a society that concluded sensible safety wasn't as important as profit and convenience, though. Funny, that.
120
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Yes, absolutely. As it stands, lifting the masking mandate in schools long after any pretence of lockdown ended *demonstrably* resulted in more Covid AND more Long Covid. And yet, somehow the number of kids dropping out entirely and adults no longer seeking work because of disability gets ignored.
120
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Were they? Seems pretty straightforward to me that there was actually plenty of evidence for it available very early on, but then as now, no-one was going to spend the money. That was it, full stop - because of money.

AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The fact remains, there is precisely zero chance that schools would have been retrofitted with adequate air filters and ventilation systems to prevent the uncontrolled spread of Covid.
1100
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Ventilation would also have helped, yes. But don't discount the fact that kids spend a lot of time in closer physical proximity to each other than adults generally do, and also frequently have, shall we say, a dubious grasp of hygiene.
1110
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The only part of this that I will disagree with is that we ever had it in the first place. I think we need to *develop* it. But our history has been built on "how many deaths are ok before the public gets p'd off" and "how many deaths can we get away with before it's cheaper to make things better."
120
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
We always have. This was just saying it out loud.
1100
AndOrNorLyn @norlyn.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
You're still incorrect, though. Mask mandates would have helped. Testing wouldn't, because of the number of missed infections that happen even with testing. And schools are *always* absolute hotbeds for passing contagious diseases, which are carried home. Many, many thousands more would have died.

Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

Killing members of the group;
Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

And I strongly suggest that you look at the definition of genocide before you beclown yourself further, Johnny. Because anyone who argues at this point that the Israeli gov't isn't currently operating with the clear intent of eliminating Palestinians as an ethnic and national group is an idiot.

"The Right of the Jewish People to the Land of Israel (Eretz Israel)
a. The right of the Jewish people to the land of Israel is eternal and indisputable and is linked with the right to security and peace; therefore, Judea and Samaria will not be handed to any foreign administration; between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty.
b. A plan which relinquishes parts of western Eretz Israel, undermines our right to the country, unavoidably leads to the establishment of a "Palestinian State," jeopardizes the security of the Jewish population, endangers the existence of the State of Israel. and frustrates any prospect of peace"
