Celebrating the last day of #NationalSaunaWeek with a look at our own sauna—one of North America’s oldest! Built over 100 years ago, it stood on Finn Hill before moving to Ballard in 1999. More than relaxation, saunas were a space for Nordic immigrants to gather, connect, & keep traditions alive. ♨️

6. Sauna is for everyone! One of the most celebrated parts of sauna culture is its inclusivity. It’s a space where people of all backgrounds, ages, and body types can come together—whether for solitude or conversation. Sauna truly celebrates equality and wellness for all.

National Nordic Museum @nordicmuseum.org · 19/02/2025
4. Sauna culture is so vital to Finnish identity that in 2020, UNESCO recognized it as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s also closely tied to sisu, the Finnish philosophy of resilience and strength. 💪

National Nordic Museum @nordicmuseum.org · 19/02/2025
4. Historically, Finns believed the sauna was a liminal space—a bridge between this world and the next. Sauna spirits like the Saunatonttu, a one-eyed elf, were said to guard the space and ensure proper behavior.

National Nordic Museum @nordicmuseum.org · 19/02/2025
2. The earliest saunas were pit saunas, dug into the ground with heated stones. Over time, they evolved into wooden structures central to Finnish life—used for bathing, healing, childbirth, and even spiritual rituals.

🔥 National Sauna Week is here 🔥 1. Organized by the Finlandia Foundation, Feb 16-22 is a week to honor the rich tradition of Finnish sauna—a practice dating back 10,000 years. But saunas are more than just a place to sweat. 🧵👇
