The fire has blown past Board Mountain, and is still continuing to spot ahead of itself. If fire growth today mirrors the past 72 hours, I'd personally expect to see evacuation upgrades further to the east/northeast.

Well, it's been a busy last 10 days with wildfires. I have been working the East Evans Creek Fire in SW Oregon. Last night the fire was mapped at 7,843.2 acres. The most significant growth was on the two large spot fires in the NE section of the fire, with the eastern spot growing the most.

Anyone in the Wetmore Area needs to evacuate now, per the Custer County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. Based on satellite imagery, the Southeast and Northwest flanks of the fire continue to be the most active right now.

All per radio traffic from firefighters on the ground and Incident Command. I am still a bit disappointed I have to break this up into multiple posts given word limits.

Aspen Acres Fire - Multiple spot fires at the end of S Pine Drive in Beulah Valley. The fire is pushing towards Geronimo Avenue. Possibly one structure involved at the top of S Pine Drive. Beulah Drive is non-defendable. The entire town of Rye is now under evacuation.

Dangerous in Pueblo/Custer Counties, Colorado. The Aspen Acres Fire is rapidly moving NE, and is now 2,476 acres. The entire town of Beulah is under a Level 3 Evacuation Order. Resources are getting pulled off the fire due to life-safety and are getting moved to a safe zone and will regroup.

Today is another extremely critical fire weather day. The SPC upgraded its outlook to an extremely critical risk, and NWS offices have upgraded to Particularly Dangerous Situation RFWs. Yes, that is now three days in a row that an extremely critical risk was issued. Today will be another long day.

I learned about the burn over and entrapment with shelters being deployed at 3 pm yesterday, and heard that 2 were life flighted around 5 pm from radio traffic while helping to report for those fires yesterday. And my heart sank when I was told about the fatalities. I did not want to believe it.

3 wildland firefighters were killed and 2 additional injured in Colorado yesterday in a burn over at the fires south of Loma, Colorado. This is an incredibly hard day for everyone in the wildland fire community. Thinking of the families, friends, and crew affected by yesterday’s tragedy.

The Snyder/Jones Fires have now officially merged and are estimated at over 28,000 acres. Structures are threatened. Due to extreme winds and extreme fire behaviors, all crews have been pulled back for their safety. Between 30 and 60 people are stuck at Black Rock Campground, per radio traffic.

A new fire has started in Eastern Utah, between the Babylon and Ferris/Far Draw Fires. It is already approximately 70 acres per NIFC and has become well established. The big problem with so many dangerous, high-priority fires occurring in one region is resource competition.

Michael Steinberg @norcalstormchasing.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
A lot of the recent ones in the last 24 hours have been holdovers from lightning that occurred two days ago

Michael Steinberg @norcalstormchasing.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
The big ones currently in Western/SW CO are either the Jones/Snyder Mesa Fires (which I am certain have merged together, probably hours ago) and the Ferris/Far Draw Fires in Montezuma/Dolores Counties

New video on the Palisades Fire and why it was so hard to contain. I push back on some major talking points being made about why this fire could have been stopped, when, in reality, there was no logical way to do so in the case of a wildland fire. youtu.be/kLq9vMbspv4

Today is the anniversary of the Park Fire in Northern California, which burned over 429,000 acres and destroyed 709 structures in Cohasset, Forest Ranch, and Paynes Creek. The fire started 5 minutes away from where I live in Chico, and it was a nail biting situation that entire day and night.

Why logging companies don’t need to use herbicides after salvage logging within burn scars. Newsflash: prescribed fire will do an even better job and is way more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and natural in the landscape.

Southern California has seen some wildfires pop up today, the largest being the Ranch Fire, southeast of Apple Valley. The fire was last mapped at 369 acres and burning at a critical rate of spread. Additional 10 engines have been requested immediate need for structure defense, per Incident Command.

I wasn’t expecting to chase storms any time soon, but alas things change! The SPC has a marginal risk for severe storms tomorrow in far Northern California for severe winds and large hail. Convective models have been showing isolated storms north of Mount Shasta, with even a chance for a supercell.
