The idea of treating menopausal symptoms with ovarian extract was introduced to the medical world, and by 1899 formulations for powdered cow ovary, called Ovarin, were commonly available. Most often the powder was placed into capsules or flavoured with vanilla; apparently the taste of cow ovaries was unpleasant.
