Amazing. Currently out on the loch, boat fishing with dry flies, but not getting many nibbles…

The recently-released Schofield Skeptiko watch, cased in Ultem (a high performance polymer).
A three-handed watch with a case made of Ultem - a polymer used in aeronautics. The hour and minute hand have large blocks of luminescent material. The metal dial is brushed to create contrast with a triangle that runs from the 12 o’clock position spreading out between the 7 and 5. “Schofield” is written at the bottom of that triangle.

Just going back through some photos from 2017. Any chance this is a Halmahera keelback (Tropidonophis punctiventris)? 🐍

Accidental, slightly atemporal, photograph of the desert / foothills outside Las Vegas. I didn’t mean to shoot B&W or to add so much grain; reminded me off a pre-Hoover Dam aerial reconnaissance picture.

Tickets were relatively straightforward - all the Egyptian national monuments accept credit / debit cards and seem to require non-Egyptians to use them rather than take Egyptian Pounds in cash. The pyramids were as impressive as you would imagine. Monumental in size. (6/x)

Now home to embassies (including the huge, white, rather brutal US embassy), Garden City was meticulously planned. It looks a little down at heel today, and many buildings seemed to be vacant, but is home to the exceptionally cute Falak Gallery and Bookstore (4/x)

Spotted a bird out on the Nile, around the First Cafaract - looked like a Masked Shrike (Lanius nubicus) but it was in the middle of a load of brush, and hard to photograph. When I came to review the photos on a (slightly) larger screen, I found something unexpected. It had been taken by a snake…

A portrait of Charles Waterton by C W Peale (1824) seen last night at the NPG. Waterton met Peale while he was in Philadelphia - the artist’s son took him home after Waterton complained about the lack of good tea in the US (sigh). The cat illustrates Waterton’s new (bad) taxidermy method.

And now there’s a sixth model. This one is named for the Ocean of Storms on the Moon (Oceanus Procellarum). It’s all black, with white markers and hands. I’d have added a splash more yellow, to echo the hyper-local nudibranch they chose to go with it - Okenia luna - picked for its name, obviously.
Black Blancpain x Swatch “Scuba” with black case, bezel and dial, and bright white markings and hands. It comes on a black and white striped NATO-style strapThe back of the watch, showing the (largely plastic) movement and large central, brass-coloured screw. The back is printed: SCUBA Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms, and has a multi colour print of Okenia luna, a nudibranch, which is largely white, with yellow tips to its gills and mantle protrusions

Remarkable “clock” coming up for auction at Bonhams - rotating duck eggs act as “dials”. It’s rumoured to be one of Bregguet’s inventions. Probably.

Feels like an appropriate time to share some photos of memento mori watches… this one is (one of many) on display at the Science Museum in the Medicine: The Wellcome Galleries and belonged to Queen Mary (1867-1953), wife of George V. Here’s an excerpt from Swatch Group’s 2022 sustainability report, highlighting the commitment to offer durable products that can be repaired. These watches can’t even be recycled. This feels like a move in the wrong direction - an opportunity missed - at odds with public commitments (19/x)
Excerpt from the Swatch Group’s 2022 Sustainability Report, showing one of the Topics for Swatch Group -
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns:
- Durable products, enabling repairs.
- Recycling and a circular economy.
- Environmental considerations in the supply chain.
-Working conditions in the supply chain
- Avoid waste.
It also shows the “Commitments” towards this Topic:
-Offer durable products that can be repaired.
- Take into account sustainability in the supply chain.
- Use sustainable materials.
-Continue to increase the amount of recycled materials used.
-Switch to bio-based material.

There’s a mechanical, self-winding movement in the Scuba FF, which you can see below. Sistem51 refers to the number of components. That “screw” in the centre is meant to hold it all together. It’s a sealed unit; regulated by robot. It’s a throwaway movement - you can’t even open the case (15/x)
View through the clear caseback of the Scuba Fifty Fathoms showing the printed bridges, backplate and rotor of the Sistem51 automotive movement. The parts are printed with a map of the Atlantic Ocean, and the underneath of the caseback has a picture of a glaucus nudibranch

But this watch is also the second of Swatch’s “collaborations” with brands within the broader corporate structure. The first was the MoonSwatch, a huge financial success (please see this excellent article by my friend Tim Barber for more details - www.wired.com/story/how-th...) (12/x)
The multicoloured Swatch x Omega Moonswatches. Bioceramic versions of the infamous Omega Speedmaster - “the first watch worn on the Moon”.

That advert was lifted from Blancpain’s book from the last major milestone (1953-2023). This year marks seventy years of the Fifty Fathoms. We’ve already seen three special editions for that anniversary (like the FF 70th Anniversary Act 1 Series III), and this Swatch version ties in with that (11/x)
Modern Blancpain Fifty Fathoms - the same black dial, but this time with markers at 12, 3, 6 and 9. Bold white hands and a slim white seconds hand, tipped in red. Large sapphire bezel with a diamond at 12, and 15, 30 and 45min markers. The watch is shown on a black fabric strap.

Interestingly, Rolex also released *their* dive watch in 1953 (the Submariner). Both claim that they built the first modern divers. Anyway, the first Fifty Fathoms was actually rather good - and rather good looking. The strange circles at the bottom of the dial change colour when damp / wet! (10/x)
Early press advert for the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, showing the stainless steel watch and band, and black dial of the watch. The dial has markers rather than numerals and is surrounded by a black rotating bezel. This is marked at 15, 30 and 45 minutes to time dives.

Finally, an Antarctic sea slug - Tritoniella Belli. According to the Sea Slug Forum, Tritoniella is a monotypic genus and “probably defends itself chemically against predators by using chimyl alcohol that it obtains from its food, the soft coral Clavularia frankliniana” - which is nice (7/x)
