Yeah, E can change where your body wants to store fat, but it won't like... actively move what you've already got, or magically start storing calories that you aren't taking in!

Very true!

"it's the GENERATIVE AI that we hate. Not the language" That's what I was responding to- large language models ARE generative, and they ARE trained off stolen data. Whether used to run agentic systems, translate text, generate code, or "write" stories, it's all still running on stolen training data

If you phrase is reductively enough of course it sounds silly. "Stealing words" could easily be turned into "stealing pixels" or "stealing shapes and colors." It's not the components, it's how they're arranged- the skill and care that went into combining them into something that MEANS something.

But to the other point, where are the dividing lines here? What is the difference between a pattern of speech for an author versus a visual style for a visual artist? Is it wrong to rip off an art style- whether written or visual? Is it okay as long as you don't rip an entire work outright?

Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 22/09/2026
The thing to me is, they *are* stealing stories and books. That's exactly how these LLMs work- by ripping off written works by the millions and pouring it all into the black box blender of "training data".

Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 21/09/2026
My original point was more generalized- to say that the language models *are* generative, and we *do* (or at least should) hate them just as much as imagegen models, because authors are artists too. Even setting that aside though, I just don't get what I've apparently done or said wrong.
110
Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 21/09/2026
But even past that, there's pretty compelling evidence of imagegen usage in the linked thread if you click through to the quoted thread of this one.

Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 21/09/2026
JFC what the fuck did I do? Regardless, creative work is still work whether it's written or visual. An author having their book ripped off by an LLM has every right to feel just as pissed about it as a visual artist being scraped for a StableDiffusion model. Commercial or not, work is being stolen.

Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 21/09/2026
I mean under the hood it's still GenAI, it just generates language instead of images or audio. So-called agentic models still rely on stolen training data the same way image generation does, it's just literal libraries' worth of written language they scraped instead of image galleries.

And even if someone in power wanted to do something about it, SCOTUS locked it in with Citizen's United making transfer of money into political speech, meaning until or unless that gets overturned, any attempt to outlaw mass bribes like this would immediately be struck down under 1A strict-scrutiny.
001
Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 11/09/2026
AFAIK *mass* promises of payouts are not legally considered bribery, or at least not in any way that makes them *prohibited.* As long as it's not a specific promise to a specific person, it's not technically illegal, as overtly corrupt as that obviously is.

These people are literally tripping over themselves to fucking kill us in "retribution" for Harris losing and everything it represented, and it would be funny if it weren't actively a threat to my life and the lives of people I care about.

Turnabout is fair play then: you are an immoral monster, and the world will be an objectively better place once you are dead.

What do you mean "you people?" Come on now, say it with your whole chest, coward.

Anyone who "makes" shit with AI is not a friend- those were not strays, they were intentional.

Agreed- people in general need to learn there is a difference between "this makes me uncomfortable" and "this needs to be illegal" no matter how uncomfortable it makes them. As long as every person involved is consenting, the solution to something making you feel icky is to mind your own business.

My hot take: OoT is "what if we aped the structure of LttP but with really clunky early 3d controls?" and it was rather good for its time but in the broader arc of the rest of the franchise it's okay at best. Perfectly serviceable but largely unremarkable Zelda- basically, it's the Voyager of LoZ.

You yourself took the initiative to come here, and all you've done is finger-wag and then you have the gall to say THEY are the one being manipulative when they don't bend over backwards to appease you and your high-horse bullshit?

Even if we assume entirely pure motivations- which is a hell of a stretch here- there's several *time zones* worth of daylight between "feeling some kinda way about someone" and spending years going out of your way to poison their social existence by spreading horrific rumors and innuendo.

First-world/modern problem to be sure, but it's still a problem. To me, an optional upgrade to add a millimeter-wave sensor package to facilitate/enable ACC would instantly elevate Slate from a "neat, but-" to a must-buy for me at least.
000
Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 01/09/2026
I really want to want a Slate but I drive mid-to-long-distance regularly. Range isn't the issue, for me it's the lack of adaptive cruise. When you're driving 2-3 hours, not having to change your cruise setpoint constantly is a boon, but AFAIK it can't upgrade to ACC, first-party or aftermarket.

I work for a company owned and run by capital-L Embarrassed Republicans and these... generously, "people" did the whole flag at half mast shit for Kirk, so it's equal parts celebrating The Event and also not wanting to subject myself to the inevitable Mandatory Performative Mourning of Dear Leader.

I mean you couldn't swing a dead cat in 2007 online culture without hitting a dozen or more SUPER INCREDIBLY BLATANT racist memes, "jokes", etc. but that one, of all things... I legit loathe the general "we're too soft nowadays" shit but damn if I don't occasionally feel that way regardless.

I guess with Todd running things for so long I sometimes forget it used to be poking fun instead of playing it straight. Same with 40k being overrun with chuds I guess- you do black comedy and satire too good and you accidentally attract exactly the kind of person you're taking the piss out of.

As big a deal as machismo and gun culture was to a certain kind of nerd in the 90's, I'm inclined to think this was an intentional troll.

I was gonna say there's no reason it couldn't just be a total modern take on a revolver, no autopistol components other than the 1911-ish design cues, but that is unmistakably the butt-plate of a box mag hanging off the bottom of the grip there.

Nona Suomi @nonasuomi.net · 25/08/2026
Speaking of, I still maintain that someone at Hasbro in the late 00's had beef with a gun nerds and fucking WON. NERF N-Strike and the follow-up Elite series that made the brand surge back in the late 00's through mid-10's? The ones with removable mags? Yeah, those are OFFICIALLY called "clips"

I only just noticed the charging handle on the barrel shroud up front on the second time scrolling past this. So it's an open-bolt machine gun, a single-action revolver, and an automatic pistol all at the same time. Somehow. I hate it. I love it.

Not an artistic note, but if it helps spark anything, I'm pretty sure most systems are plumbed and just use tapwater and a CO2 tank.

Holy shit I thought you were being facetious but she actually has a pinned comment lamenting the death of literacy and how she's gonna write a book about it, and then IMMEDIATELY below that there's this shit. Absolutely incredible work, Megan- no notes.

If only, but when you're internal it's coming out of your own departmental budget. At least it's not as bad as mangling five-plus minicoms in a row on a single run. Never before in my life did I have the PRIVILEGE of being the owner of a singular drop of 6a with over 200 USD in materials cost.

I keep telling the FNG to just swallow his pride and use passthrough terminators already but he keeps insisting he's "got it this time, for sure..." One entire foot of service loop later...

Ah shit, these terminators are for 22awg conductors, and you're packing 24- this is just gonna slide right off! Gotta chop chop off an inch or so and try again with the right hardware, sorry hun!

I have the Poppy Trail 200-series (basically Metlox's take on the Fiestaware style of bold solid-colors from the 30's and 40's) that I inherited from my grandma, who got it from HER mother. Always loved how they look!

Some folks use a single fullbody example and then make something like rectangle crops/frames over the top that show what it would be if it *were* halfbody/bust? Not sure if that works, but it's what I've seen done before.

Don't mind me, it's just a corny joke about the classic Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" with the black-half-white-half thing. That said, Gene Roddenberry was a horny old goat- he would definitely have used this design if he could have gotten away with it in 1969!
