Feels like a good time for a WIP Wednesday! I’ve been slowly but surely writing more amnesia fic, aka the mortifying ordeal of having to go through a second big queer awakening when you already (apparently) have a husband

“So…” Who are you? he wants to ask. But he can’t bring himself to say it, not in so many words. “We must be pretty close.”
Lan Wangji—Lan Zhan looks down at his hands. “I’m your husband.”
Wei Wuxian’s brain screeches to a halt. He’s pretty sure if he were still hooked up to the heart monitor, it would be flatlining.
Husband. Did he say husband? It sounded like he said husband. Like he said he’s Wei Wuxian’s husband. But that’s just…that’s not possible.
It takes a second for it to register that the nervous laughter he’s hearing is coming from himself. Lan Zhan’s eyes are still fixed on his hands, and his face has gone completely, utterly blank.
“Sorry.” Wei Wuxian presses both hands over his mouth, like that might hold the laughter in, and mutters through his fingertips, “I just… Sorry. But I don’t… I’m not gay.”

Lan Zhan’s gaze snaps up to his, eyes going sharp. “Ah. The summer after grad school.” That’s where Wei Wuxian’s memory stops. Lan Zhan knows as much, after the extensive interrogation Wei Wuxian went through earlier.
Wei Wuxian’s laughter trails off. “Yeah?”
“It wasn’t until a few years later,” Lan Zhan says, each word wrapping around Wei Wuxian’s chest like a cobra, “that you realized.”
“Realized that I’m gay?” Wei Wuxian asks, his voice too high, his throat tight.
Lan Zhan shakes his head, and the cobra around Wei Wuxian’s chest releases its grip a little. Is it homophobic to be relieved? He can’t help it, he’s relieved—until Lan Zhan opens his mouth again and says, “Bi.”
Okay. Okay, okay, okay. The cobra’s back, and it brought some friends. How fun.
This doesn’t make sense. He doesn’t… He’s not… It’s just, isn’t that something he should know about himself by now? Or have known by then—whatever, he can’t worry about what tense he’s living in while he’s also staring this in the face, it’s too much.
