do you think somebody whispered in trump's ear about his ability to cause chaos renaming things or is it an aspect of his sort of protean trickster nature to know he can do this

wow, this might be a good opportunity for her to make a break for it

I also think it's probably vaguely related to how strong organized labor is in hollywood productions, and there is probably a lot of good in acknowledging all the good work the key grip or whoever is doing even on the worst TV show

yeah I think that's what's rubbing me the wrong way, the idea that a sort of dissociated appreciation of craft is more enlightened and valid than the success of the whole project

feels like a weird take. people expect stories to fully hang together from beginning to end because that's what's satisfying, but it's also very difficult. so most original stories with compelling premises start much better than they end, revealing something genuinely disappointing

My wife waked to ring the bell to call up our mayds to the washing, and I was and she angry that our bell did not wake them sooner, but I will get a bigger bell.

the other half of this would be like my concurrent limewire library but if that's on a hard drive somewhere I am not motivated to find it

slowed my car down to look at a bunch of big mushrooms growing in someone's yard and an acorn hit my roof like a gunshot. I immediately thought like "what an autumnal scenario"

I guess I'm conflating "truly frightened" with the strictly unheimlich, here. I definitely got effectively made jumpy or grossed out by things in a similar time frame but not in a way I dwelt on afterwards

increasingly convincing myself that they are not going to let you directly control consumer electronics in the near future. everything you do is going to be a natural language conversation with an AI that's going to snitch on you if it doesn't like what you say

I genuinely don't even know what people mean by "banned book" anymore. like in america it's almost entirely about school libraries in individual districts at this point, right? and other than that it's this kind of historical/speculative larp

the concept of The Titanic is cool because it represents both an incredibly high-profile failure of a grandiose project and an incredibly high-profile success of a grandiose project

I have detachable bullhorns already to help with this but they'd be way more convenient if they were a little more centered. maybe I should look into getting some other esoteric handlebar shape
010
maundering yokel @nomic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
also I definitely gave myself an ongoing tension headache from overusing a bunch of muscles around the back of my neck while leaning on the handlebars

did 10 or 12 miles on my bike trying to get my sea legs back and I felt pretty good but then I came home and very nearly had my legs give out trying to go up a staircase

anyway I immediately decided I'm sticking to dedicated paths, full lanes of traffic, and sidewalks (according to taste and convenience) like all right thinking americans
010
maundering yokel @nomic.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
on average I would say one third of people use the bike lane for its intended purpose (operating a personal conveyance in the direction of traffic) and then it's a third pedestrians and a third people going the wrong way

maundering yokel @nomic.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
this would be way less concerning if I was simply renting the bicycle I used, then cleaning and maintenance would be the job of a faceless guy who parks his van in the bike lane to collect scooters and ebikes

maundering yokel @nomic.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
went for a bike ride for the first time in quite a while and got to try out my town's new bike lanes, which are functionally big gutters that exist to keep drains out of the road surface and accumulate oil and small sharp objects

"avatar" was a great pull for "digital representation" because it codifies reality as spiritually above computer world. neal stephenson remains stubbornly influential

I wouldn't be super surprised if we hit some kind of hard complexity/obedience tradeoff ceiling. why would something better than me at my job want to do what I say

I feel like I could probably manage to zone out at a phoebe bridgers concert even without a phone. just sort of shuffling around looking at my drink. I could be less present than you could possibly imagine

I would sort of get the argument that star wars is fundamentally about unraveling family drama, but I don't get why you can't just make another family to have drama about. you can still do all the problematic bloodline stuff but these guys clearly aren't working anymore

looking into it slightly, this lady's beat is basically claiming that (specifically woman-led) country music is dominant for some other reason than "most non-country listeners are no longer captured in chart calculations because of technology"
