It is a shameful stain on our history that anyone involved in supporting or benefitting or down playing this is allowed to be in public office. It is shameful that people who did this were pardoned and it would not have happened without our current president. #2thumbsdown

As a Portland resident, I can say that our city has been doing a lot of work since Covid and it’s finally starting to pay off. Downtown is probably the best it’s been since 2019 and the neighborhoods are probably better than they have been for a decade. National guard is the last thing we need.

Words of wisdom.
Being gay is like being left-handed—some people are, most people aren’t, and nobody really knows exactly why. It’s not right or wrong; it’s just one of the many natural ways to be. The world works best when everyone gets to live as they truly are. So if you ever feel out of place, remember: you're not broken, you're just beautifully different—and that’s something the world needs. 🏳️‍🌈

Mood today. 🤷🏻‍♀️
The media is full of smart people who are being really dumb. He loves to be the center of attention and doesn’t care if it’s negative or positive… in fact, I think he prefers negative because then he can throw a tantrum about how unfair it all is…. Poor baby is being persecuted while he makes literally billions of dollars off his grift of the American people, many of whom have been duped by his rhetoric.

Headlines should properly say, “Day ___ of congressional republicans refusing to use their constitutional power and responsibility to provide a check against an unconstitutional administration bent on transferring all the wealth to the most wealthy.”

That can be the headline for pretty much ANY story about his actions and then the particulars can be in the fine print.

These ideas are not original to Vance or Bannon: In the 21st century, elected leaders such as Hugo Chávez or Viktor Orbán have also used their democratic mandates for the same purpose. Chávez fired 19,000 employees of the state oil company; Orbán dismantled labor protections for the civil service. Trump, Musk, and Russell Vought, the newly appointed director of the Office of Management and Budget and architect of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025—the original regime-change blueprint—are now using IT operations, captured payments systems, secretive engineers, a blizzard of executive orders, and viral propaganda to achieve the same thing.

This appears to be DOGE’s true purpose. Although Trump and Musk insist they are fighting fraud, they have not yet provided evidence for their sweeping claims. Although they demand transparency, Musk conceals his own conflicts of interest. Although they do say they want efficiency, Musk has made no attempt to professionally audit or even understand many of the programs being cut. Although they say they want to cut costs, the programs they are attacking represent a tiny fraction of the U.S. budget. The only thing these policies will certainly do, and are clearly designed to do, is alter the behavior and values of the civil service. Suddenly, and not accidentally, people who work for the American federal government are having the same experience as people who find themselves living under foreign occupation.

Continuing to work through Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari. My reflection this morning…
We must be curators of the information we take in, applying skepticism as we consider claims and look for evidence. Evidence isn’t about a gut feeling or what is loudest or what you hear most, it is what can be proved with documentation. We must ask what documentation? Who funded it? How many well known scholars in the field agree? How does it align with other proven facts? We must also listen to a wide variety of perspectives, even those we disagree with, to gain deeper understanding of the complexities.

This is slow and often tedious work, but this is the process of developing an informed opinion and you don’t need a formal education to do it. My grandmother was one of the wisest and well informed people I knew, and she barely finished high school.

All you need is some basic curiosity and concern for the common good.Highlighted text reads: “an unregulated information market doesn’t necessarily lead people to identify and correct their errors, because it may well prioritize outrage over truth.”

Things I am grateful for this morning:

1. I woke up. In a warm house with fur babies and family. This means that I get to add to my list! As my grandmother would say, “it’s better than the alternative.”

2. I have amazing kids. Amazing, loving, smart, caring, beautiful kids.

3. I am loved. By family, friends, students and colleagues. Cared for in multiple ways across contexts, time and space.

4. I have a sense of purpose in my life. I get to do work that challenges me intellectually and that has public service at its core.

5. I am still learning.

Photo of text that reads: Trying to navigate the new landscape as I have requested my student loans get moved to the old plans Biden opened before he left that are not under litigation. While those are being argued by republicans I have not been able to make payments, so the months don’t count toward my public service loan forgiveness, but also… since nobody has been able to pay, this blockage by republicans is costing the government (and therefore taxpayers) millions, if not billions of dollars. What a stupid unnecessary and stressful waste of time and resources. Thanks MAGA.

“And I think that’s especially the dynamic with Trump in charge, because he’s extraordinarily skillful at commanding attention. And so one of the things that we’re going to make a conscious effort to do is: Whatever else is going on, our message is going to be: They are ripping you off.”

I 100% back Jeffries on this strategy. Whatever else trump might be, he is highly skilled at getting attention and creating chaos. He is a bully and many of his rhetorical rants are aimed at getting folks to do the work for him out of fear and anger. If we focus on economics, we are by extension focusing on many of the most vile racist and xenophobic parts of his agenda… because it’s all connected…. But focusing on the economic piece can help us stay united when identity politics would divide us.

Economic justice holds human rights at its core.

It is a hard pill to swallow that we still have to wade through racism and sexism, but developmentally our society is at polarization and we can’t get to adaptation without moving through minimization and acceptance. Reducing economic inequality will help us find the common ground we need to put the bullies in their place.

Some truth being spoken here. This is why we need to keep TikTok.
Screenshot of TikTok thread where the original video asked “how did he [Jimmy Carter] get absolutely crushed in 1980?”
The top comment shown in this photo says “so the bad timeline we’re in now started with the Carter loss. Imagine the timeline where he won the second term.”
This main comment is then followed by a list for the following 3 threads:
1. “IDK if all the bad were in is about Cater’s loss but I like imagining a timeline where he won.”
2. “It’s not about his loss in total, but it ALL starts with Reagan.”
3. “The decline of the American middle class.”

“I am at the DMV and I am taking advantage of the loooong wait time by making progress in this book that I highly recommend. I am not very far in, but even what I have read so far has been incredibly helpful in giving me perspectives to think about.

Consider the “deep state” and bureaucracy more broadly. As much as they vex us, there are important functions being performed that we should consider before tearing everything down. I believe it would serve us better to refine and reimagine with intention… no matter how expensive it is, tearing things down indiscriminately, without a process of reflection and review will cost us much more in the long run. Created an extremely successful assignment in my Families and Society class fall term. After 18 years, I love teaching this class more than ever! Description of the assignment, an individual mind mirror and group poster attached.
Students made individual an individual “mind mirror” to analyze a specific character from the book they read. Then as a group, they put together a poster that included their individual mind mirrors as well as information about the story overall and connections to other concepts discussed in class. We then had a gallery walk and silent discussion at the end of the term where they used post-its to comment on each others’ work. I gave them time in class to work on their posters because coordinating schedules is a hard task for college students. The result was I got to listen in and participate in rich discussions about the books they read and their ideas about how it connected to our class!!! Definitely repeating this assignment!!!Individual “mind mirror” of one of the characters (Ursula) from the book 100 years of solitude. Shows face of woman and other images connected to her character (pig, baby and a doll) as well as adjectives that describe her (strong, provider)Group poster for the book 100 years of solitude. Includes multiple mind mirrors, a timeline and descriptions of different connections to class. Also included is group book rating (3.5 stars).
