Toni is more digestible than Max to them because she is rich, less womanist and willing to do things for money; a script they related to beauty/desirability. Mind you, these women made multiple covers: Jet, Ebony, Essence. It is not lost on me (and not hating) that half of cast of Girlfriends is mixed race and skinny. They are also rich. All the Black Middle Class Dreams. It's not their (Girlfriends) looks that are "attractive" to them, but the idea.

Are we ready to talk about Fresh? A masterpiece in filmmaking. I appreciate how it's viscerally evocative. The music gives you goosebumps. The violence is felt as a pit in your stomach. But the plot makes it digestible. This movie built my empathy as I related to the main character. Sadly too well.
