Monotheism The religious pluralism of the ancient world was gradually supplanted by the homogenising dogma of Christianity & later Islam, dividing us into believers & infidels. How much more tolerant, intellectually open society might have been had monotheism never emerged & so zealously promoted!

I agree that retribution & vengeance are not identical. Retributive justice argues that a person should receive a punishment proportionate to their wrongdoing. Vengeance is often driven by anger. Justice should be about accountability, not retaliation. I believe it should exclude the death penalty.

Capital punishment isn't law in every country. I fully agree that certain criminals deserve severe punishment, Voxy, but I'm just against the death penalty, its finality. Like Amnesty International, I advocate for the death penalty to be abolished. I fully respect your right to a different opinion.

Even if the distinction between alleged God's hidden and revealed wills successfully explains how divine determinism & a certain kind of human freedom could coexist, it does not establish that God exists, that the distinction is true, or that humans possess libertarian free will. Gods are imagined!

I can't judge for you, Voxy, but for me protecting the victim has THE highest priority. And I believe we should also demonstrate that crime doesn't pay. I just stop at vengeance, as I believe that ultimately does have a detrimental effect on society.

I too am a victim's advocate, Voxy, but I don't believe in capital punishment. Taking evil seriously doesn't require answering it with more killing. A society can protect people, impose serious consequences & acknowledge victims' suffering without resorting to execution. To let that woman rot ../2
