Entrance to the Saamal Cenote at Selva Maya. Natural limestone sinkholes filled with groundwater, cenotes were sacred to the Mayan empire as an entrance to the underworld.

A "smaller" pyramid at Izamal. This is a Mayan town where Pope Paul II visited a few decades ago to apologise (sort of) to the Mayan people for the Catholic Church's treatment of them from the time of the Spanish Inquisition on into the 20th century. In honor of his visit, the residents painted all the buildings in town yellow and white -- the colors of the Vatican.

The Ek’ Balam archeological site, featuring ruins of a Mayan temple, pyramid, and palace plus outbuildings and reconstructed traditional thatch huts.

The subject of our research, and the inspiration for the next book in David Poyer’s Tiller Galloway Diving Adventures! This photo shows the Samuula cenote, which we went to after Ek’ Balam. It is known for its distinctive cave eye, which allows sunlight to pierce the pitch-black cave.
