Ablative materials are a solution to this problem in which the material burns away in a controlled manner protecting the spacecraft and the payload. NMSU's Department of MAE recently hosted the 16th Ablation Workshop for the second consecutive time.

New Mexico State University is one of only 25 universities that are part of Apple's Next-Gen Innovators Mentorship Program. The students selected for the hands-on and virtual program will be announced in December and will have a mentor from January through May 2027.

NMSU’s Atomic Aggies saw a successful launch at the 2026 IREC, the largest international rocketry competition in the world. Every year, colleges from across the globe send their rocketry teams to compete in the event hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association.

Grade school students from Las Cruces attended NMSU for a week-long summer program hosted by the College of Engineering. NM PREP Academy is a summer camp for young students who show an early interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, particularly engineering.
