There would be pros and cons for both. But I cannot see Puerto Rico becoming a state now that Trump has made English the official language. Puerto Rican Spanish is too big a piece of the culture to force it to be limited

Not all of the sudden. They don't teach you in schools but the Truman admin bombed 2 cities in PR that were rising for independence. Created laws to ban talking about independence. Made it illegal to fly the PR flag in PR Arrested and murdered independence leadership with radiation poisoning.

It is changing, but I'm pretty sure the only independence the US has offered PR was sovereignty with free association that would allow the US final say on matters that would be "National Security" issues. Basically just statehood.

What you don't realize is that there has never been a real legal referendum vote with the actual options. The last congress attempted to pass a bill to oversee one but it was shelved in the Senate. Only the US Congress has the authority to change the status of PR

Pro-independent folks aren't denying people a vote. PR has been denied proper representation since her annexation. Given citizenship only to be added to the WW1 draft. Given commonwealth status because Truman bombed PR and his reelection was in doubt. But always denied a vote by Congress

Trump as POTUS hasn't come close to other levels of fascism of presidents' past. In 1948 the Fascist Truman admin forced PR to pass Ley de la Mordaza making it illegal to fly the PR Flag, sing songs about PR or even talk about independence and even bombed several PR cities in 1950.

It is the US calling all the shots. The island belongs to the US. The US Congress has final say on PR laws, PR funding, PR trade, including any status referendum to make PR a State, Independent, or keep status quo. A bill to even hold referendum vote didn't pass in the last congress

Don't get me started on the insurance industry! Customers should be able to buy insurance direct without legally being required to shop through a licensed broker that takes large commissions that are added to your premiums for filling out paperwork in most cases 1 time per year.

This opens up a bigger issue that I am passionate about Insurance is too expensive in this country There should be clear transparency to show how much of what we pay is going toward commissions for an insurance agent that files paperwork 1 time a year. I'm sure most people would be disgusted.

There was a bill in the House of Reps a few years back that offered state sponsored referendum votes. The "Independence" was free association and US military protection. which gives US the right to refusal of anything they deem a national security risk. Look at what Trump is doing based on "risk"

He was sold that a trade war would be easy when trade is extremely complex. countries are doing less business with the US and are increasingly getting their goods from elsewhere because of the tariffs. It took 2 years for the Canada and Mexico trade deal to complete. Any 90-day "deals" would be BS
