A 64-year-old Ocean View man died Friday after his motorcycle collided with an SUV at a Cape May County intersection.

Troopers responded to the crash scene, at Route 9 and Church Road in Upper Township, shortly before 4 p.m., according to a New Jersey State Police spokesman.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the SUV was stopped at the intersection on Church Road, police said.

Ralph Watson was riding his motorcycle on Route 9 southbound with a 64-year-old woman as his passenger, according to police.

When the SUV made a left turn from Church Road onto Route 9 northbound, the motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the SUV, police said.

Watson and his passenger were taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. Watson died the following day, police said.

The SUV driver suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, police said

Atlantic City teen held despite reduced charges in $220K stolen car crash

Eric Conklin | NJ.com

A South Jersey teenager charged in a crash that killed an Atlantic County couple was denied release from jail Thursday, despite evidence that he was not driving the stolen vehicle involved in the collision.

https://www.nj.com/atlantic/2026/09/atlantic-city-teen-held-despite-reduced-charges-in-220k-stolen-car-crash.html

According to a criminal complaint, Longport police first spotted the vehicle at 3:42 a.m. An officer could not stop the vehicle before it fled across the JFK Memorial Bridge.

The owner told police they were unaware that the vehicle, registered in Pennsylvania, had been stolen, the affidavit states.

About four hours later, Hamilton Township police located the car and pursued it. They lost sight of the vehicle until it crashed into Barr and Stilwell’s car, sending the sedan into a gas station parking lot.

Brown was under the influence, fell asleep before the crash, and was awakened by the “mayhem,” Settle said. Police arrested him after he exited the car through its sunroof.

The prosecutor’s office said the suspects had been charged based on the initial investigation, and they could face additional counts as the investigation proceeds.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, which investigated the crash because of the police pursuit, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brown is scheduled to appear for a pre-indictment conference Sept. 25.

Baby killed in New Jersey grocery store parking lot crash, 2 women charged
By NBC New York Staff • Published September 1, 2026 • Updated on September 1, 2026 at 8:18 pm

A 9-month-old boy was killed, and his mother and 5-year-old sister were hospitalized after prosecutors say an unlicensed driver struck the family in a New Jersey grocery store parking lot.

The crash happened Friday in the NPGS parking lot in Jackson Township, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors say 20-year-old Maria Cobon-Guzman was driving without a license when she struck the mother and her two children.

The mother and her 5-year-old daughter were hospitalized. They are expected to recover. The 9-month-old boy later died from his injuries.

Cobon-Guzman faces charges including manslaughter and assault by auto. Prosecutors allege she never even had a valid driver's license — in New Jersey or anywhere.

A second woman, Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, was also apprehended, accused of knowing Cobon-Guzman did not have a driver's license but allowing her to drive. The 22-year-old from Toms River was charged as well.

    Pedestrian Safety

Overview
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has made pedestrian safety a top priority.New Jersey has high rates of pedestrian injuries and fatalities, according to state police data. With New Jersey being the most densely populated state in the country, pedestrians and motorists need to exercise caution and courtesy when sharing New Jersey roadways.

NJDOT has implemented a Complete Streets policy that enables safe access and mobility of pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users of all ages and abilities. Accomplished through the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of new and retrofit transportation facilities, Complete Streets works within public rights of way that are federally or state funded, and include projects processed or administered through the NJDOT's Capital Program. NJDOT encourages regional and local jurisdictions to adopt similar policies.

Pedestrians should be aware of general safety tips; how to use pedestrian traffic signals and crosswalks and New Jersey rules governing the responsibilities of pedestrians and drivers. The new Stop and Stay Stopped law states that motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks risk a $200 fine and additional penalties. Pedestrians who fail to yield for vehicles at any point on the roadway other than within a crosswalk marked or unmarked can also be fined.

4 NJ teens steal $220K G Wagon, lead cops on hours-long car chase before crashing, killing beloved couple
By David DeTurris
Published Aug. 25, 2026, 12:15 a.m. ET

A crew of reckless New Jersey teens allegedly stole a luxury SUV valued at $220,000 and led cops on an hours-long chase before crashing the vehicle head-on into another car — killing a beloved grandmother and her longtime partner.

Four teens allegedly swiped a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G Wagon early Saturday morning and took it for a joy ride that ended in tragedy when they slammed into a Hyundai sedan while trying to evade cops shortly before 8 a.m., NJ.com reported.

The youths were speeding down the wrong side of the road when they struck the sedan near Route 50 and Third Street in Mays Landing and sent it careening into a nearby gas station, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Nayshaun Brown, 18, and three other teens were speeding down the wrong side of the road in a stolen 2024 Mercedes-Benz G Wagon just before 8 a.m. FOX 29
The crash killed the sedan’s two occupants, Robert Barr, Jr., 54, and Alice Stilwell, 67, from Egg Harbor Township, prosecutors said.
The teens escaped the car wreck largely unscathed and attempted to flee, but were quickly arrested, authorities said.
Police had been tailing the stolen G Wagon since about 3:40 a.m. in nearby Longport, when it blasted past a local cop who attempted to pull it over.

Eagle-eyed cops in Hamilton Township then spotted the vehicle and chased after it around 7:45 a.m., but officers had lost sight of it a few minutes before the crash, prosecutors said.
Nayshaun Brown, 18, and three other teens — whose names were not released because they are minors — were charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, joyriding and eluding police after the deadly wreck, according to records.

For those in the US who say the annual number of crash deaths (40k+) cannot be lowered, look at the progress of France whose road crash statistics in the '70s were even worse than the US. Once comparable, Europe typically now runs at about 25% of US road death rates.

NJ ranks third for fatal crashes involving aggressive or careless driving, report finds
A LendingTree analysis found 45.1% of the state's fatal crashes in 2024 involved at least one unsafe driving behavior.

New Jersey ranked third in the nation for the share of fatal crashes involving aggressive or careless driving behaviors in 2024, according to a new LendingTree analysis.

The report found that 288 of New Jersey's 638 fatal crashes in 2024 (or 45.1%) involved at least one unsafe driving factor, including aggressive driving, careless driving, inattentive operation, improper driving or driving without due care. Only Arkansas, at 47.2%, and Louisiana, at 46.2%, ranked higher.

Nationally, the study found men accounted for 78.6% of fatal crashes involving aggressive or careless driving, while women accounted for 20%. Millennials made up the largest share of drivers involved in those crashes at 31.5%, followed by Generation Z at 27.7%. Together, the two generations accounted for nearly 60% of such fatal crashes.

LendingTree car insurance expert Lindsay Bishop said driver behavior plays a larger role than demographics.

"Millennial and Gen Z drivers often spend more time commuting, driving for work or traveling during rush hour and late-night hours than older generations," Bishop said. "That can increase their risk of being involved in a fatal crash. Regardless of age or gender, drivers who speed or disregard traffic laws more frequently are more likely to be involved in a fatal collision."

The report also found the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 were the vehicle models most frequently involved in fatal crashes linked to aggressive or careless driving. Researchers said the rankings likely reflect the vehicles' popularity as well as evidence that larger, heavier pickup trucks can contribute to more severe crashes.

The Friday crash in Ocean County that shut down a large portion of the Garden State Parkway was fatal, claiming the life of a New York woman, New Jersey State Police told NJ.com.

At 3 p.m. Friday, a Toyota sedan driven by Johan Mendez, 26, of New York, veered off the road at milepost 75.8 in Lacey Township and hit the left guardrail, state police said.

The Toyota, carrying four passengers, reentered the road and collided with a Hyundai sedan, ejecting its back-seat passengers.

Iisiz Lopez, 20, of New York, and an infant were ejected from the backseat of the Hyundai. Lopez died in the crash.

Mendez, the other passengers and the infant sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital, according to officials. The driver of the Hyundai also sustained minor injuries.

The crash shut down all lanes on a large portion of the Garden State Parkway northbound in Ocean County and caused a multi-mile delay, Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy told NJ.com on Friday. The crash site reopened with delays at approximately 8:30 p.m.
