Suicide is always tragic. I wrote this in 2023 about the dangers of using a particular suicide or warnings about elevated risks of suicide to make bigger political points - even if it's well meaning. Sharing today in case anyone finds helpful.

Remembering this absolute corker from the new guidance. "Saying that homophobic people have negative attitudes towards gay people is stereotyping" Our judiciary is stacked with the weirdest people alive.
Examples of stereotypes in relation to religion or belief are that persons who hold or manifest certain gender-critical beliefs necessarily have negative attitudes towards trans people, or that persons who hold or manifest the belief that same-sex sexual activity is sinful necessarily have negative attitudes towards gay people. The judgment explains that: ‘it may be that some persons who hold / manifest such beliefs have such animus, but it is stereotyping to assume that all do.

Having a cursory read through the new EHRC guidance and I couldn't help but notice the sneaky little degendering of trans women thrown in here
2.40 The Act protects people from victimisation when they have done a protected act. This protection applies irrespective of their protected characteristic.

Examples
2.41 A person who was registered as female at birth and has decided to spend the rest of his life as a man has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment.

2.42 A person who was registered male at birth and has been living as a woman for some time and who has obtained a Gender Recognition Certificate has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment.

The Independent article on this is even more absurd, because alongside the OfS and Phillipson citing "concerns about foreign interference" there are comments from Free Speech Union; an org of eugenicists and gender criticals that's funded by Peter Thiel as well as Viktor Orban's MCC think tank.
The Office for Students (OfS) will oversee this "first-of-its-kind" scheme, launching from the upcoming academic year. It will allow university staff, external speakers, and non-student members to report concerns regarding providers in England, according to the Department for Education (DfE).

The higher education regulator will investigate these complaints, with powers to recommend that universities review decisions, offer compensation, or enhance their existing processes.

From next April, new registration conditions will enable the OfS to fine universities for breaches of their Freedom of Speech Act duties. Penalties could reach £500,000 or 2 per cent of income, and severe cases may result in deregistration, risking public funding loss.

The OfS said it has received reports of speakers and lecturers being “harassed and blocked” because of gender-critical or religious views, concerns about foreign interference restricting academic freedom, and job adverts requiring specific ideological beliefs.“It is important that the OfS discharges its new responsibilities fairly, transparently and proportionately.”

Lord Toby Young of Acton, director of the FSU, said that while the new complaints system is “welcome news”, it should be open for students to use as well.

He said that the FSU will “continue to campaign for their inclusion”.The Free Speech Union (FSU) said nearly one in 10 of the 5,700-plus cases it has fought over the past six years involved universities “failing to protect free speech”.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “Freedom of speech is the foundation of every university’s success, enabling them to foster robust debate and exchange challenging ideas respectfully.

“But there are far too many cases where academics and speakers are being silenced, inciting an unacceptable culture of fear and stifling the pursuit of knowledge.

Considering that this is quite literally contained within the Forstater judgement (which established Gender Criticalism as a protected belief).... I don't see how this ruling is anything except a miscarriage of justice, even by the pro-GC standards of the courts.
This judgment does not mean that those with gender-critical beliefs can ‘misgender’
trans persons with impunity. The Claimant, like everyone else, will continue to be
subject to the prohibitions on discrimination and harassment that apply to everyone
else. Whether or not conduct in a given situation does amount to harassment or
discrimination within the meaning of EqA will be for a tribunal to determine in a given
case.

He's now throwing his toys out of his pram and directing personal attacks towards the one non-binary council member on social media. The guy's a fucking prick, unsurprisingly.
Many people have asked to see the motion that Cllr Dulston and I put forward at Full Council. A motion that led to us being branded every insult in the modern lexicon—some contradictory, some imaginative, all delivered with the fervour of people who have long since stopped listening. Those people are your councillors.
I got bigot, transphobe, homophobe, misogynist, fascist, scumbag, cis man, and my favourite, witchfinder general. All from your elected representatives, all because we want to protect women and girls.
One cabinet member (pronouns They/Them) was so distraught I thought "they" were going to dissolve right there on the chamber floor—melt into a puddle of righteous indignation and procedural despair, leaving nothing behind but a lanyard and the faint smell of herbal tea. You'll be glad to know that 10 minutes later, when "they" delivered "their" report, "they" were as happy as a lottery winner on a three-day bender—beaming, buoyant, utterly reborn.
The transformation was so complete it felt chemically assisted, as if someone (possibly the Greens) had slipped a fistful of drugs into her one-litre water bottle. But alas, no, it was just the same old performative nonsense.
So the motion is below... clean, simple, almost offensively reasonable—it is titled Women’s Privacy, Dignity, and Safety Across Darlington.
A title so benign it could lull a charging bull into quiet reflection. The aim? To implement the Supreme Court ruling clarifying that, under the Equality Act 2010, “sex” refers to biological sex. Sensible stuff. Dry as toast, but necessary.
I worked with the Tories—yes, strange bedfellows—to craft something measured, respectful, bulletproof. No rights stripped, no torches lit. Just a line in the sand. But that wasn't enough for Labour and the Greens, they want men to be in women-only spaces and they will do anything to make that happen.
Does any of the motion scream that the authors are bigots/ transphobes/homophobes/misogynists/fascists?*

I want these people to die, actually.
6. Wait before considering a request
Schools are also told to allow for “watchful waiting” before considering a request, “to ensure it is a sustained and properly thought-through decision”.

They should consider if the child has made “similar requests” before, and seek to understand factors that may have influenced the child, such as their “peers or social media”.

The guidance also asks schools to consider whether a child feels “pressured” to identify differently because they “simply do not align” with stereotypes associated with their sex.

Other factors listed for consideration are whether input from a special educational needs coordinator is “appropriate”, or if there is an “interaction” with the child’s sexual orientation.

7. Factoring in other pupils and staff
When considering requests for social transitioning, schools are told to consider the impact on other pupils, including safeguarding concerns.

Schools may conclude that the impact on the school community “is such that it may not be possible to agree to support a request”.

If a change has been agreed, schools should communicate this to other pupils and staff “where it is necessary and proportionate to do so”.

But the guidance adds that “this should be done sensitively, without implying contested views around gender identity are fact”.

That's not even what the judgement says. The sticking point was the NHS not providing the nurses with alternative accommodations, not the fact that they let a trans member of staff use the changing room. The BBC is doing what the BBC does, yet again.

Quick little addition
Worthwhile little addendum - I think the pressure put onto trans men / mascs also intertwines with common, unaddressed misunderstandings about the transfeminine experience re: hypervisibility which can lead to resentment and defensiveness based on an incorrect assumption that our hypervisibility means that people care more about transfeminine struggle (they don't, hypervisibility just means we're fetishised and dehumanised more, it doesn't give our voices more weight). This perceived lack of transfeminine invisibilisation I believe contributes heavily to online transmisogyny from trans men / mascs, and whilst the behaviour remains indefensible it is at least understandable.

The answer remains as mentioned above; willingly creating and sharing knowledge about ourselves and our experiences with each other and not letting incorrect assumptions often handed down to us from cis society remain unchallenged.

Thoughts about recent discourse(s) and transmisogynistic mulching events:
Something that I’ve seen pointed out by several people about the transmisogyny prevalent during this discourse, that I myself have observed, is that it’s primarily being done by younger trans men and mascs, often pre-transition or early-transition, whereas trans men / mascs who have been transitioning for some time (and are often more offline) frankly tend to be more chill, and I believe there are oppressions underpinning this that are worth talking about.

The primary oppressive modality that trans men / mascs face early in transition is something called regendering, this can simply be described as a pressure to reassert themselves as women instead of seeking to “rise above their station” via an assertion of masculinity or manhood, something that is seen as delusional by patriarchy due to manhood being a biologically nepotistic category. This is also the primary oppressive modality faced by trans children, which for both trans children and trans men / mascs stems from the status of both children and assigned-women as propertised, objectified classes that exist as forms of familial, patriarchal and national capital and signifiers of reproductive futurity.

The biological nepotism that underpins patriarchal manhood can best be described as a one way door, it’s a future designation placed upon people assigned-male, you can never enter it from outside that designation but you can most certainly leave it (or be pushed out of it via emasculation: see how men constantly try and call each other's masculinity into question as a policing mechanism). Leaving manhood leads to the counter-modality of regendering which is called “degendering,” we’ll be talking more about this later. While trans men / mascs are never actually allowed to enter through the manhood door (a form of oppressive resistance called transemasculation), encountering that door whilst simultaneously being pressured to reassert themselves as women puts immense pressure on trans men / mascs to adopt normative signifiers of masculinity in order to be taken seriously, some of the more harmful signifiers being misogyny and transmisogyny.

This coupled with the often-inevitable internalisation of regendering pressure can lead to what I can best describe as the expression of a schizophrenic phenomena, where trans men / mascs are engaging in masculine self-assertion via harmful signifiers (misogyny and transmisogyny) and simultaneously regendering themselves as a form of woman or AFAB due to the aforementioned internalisation of regendering pressure. This is a phenomena that I not only believe remains unelucidated within a lot of trans male / masc communities online but is often actively reinforced.

So why is this phenomena so much more common amongst younger, early-transition and pre-transition trans men / mascs? The answer to this is surprisingly simple.

Regendering has limits.Regendering functions like an elastic band, the further away from assigned-womanhood trans men / mascs get, the more pressure there is on them to return to the fold, but there comes a point in transition where recapture is no longer seen as possible, the trans man / masc is considered “too far gone” to be reigned back in and the elastic band snaps, but instead of finally being seen as men or sufficiently masculine they are instead cast into the limbo between sexes (a phenomenon known as third-sexing). They are abjectified, they are monstered, they are degendered.

The simplest way to understand degendering is as a Schrödinger’s box in which the degendered individual is seen and treated as male, female, neither or both depending on which designation(s) can enable the most harm in any given moment, a great unfortunately not-so-theoretical example of this would be a trans woman arrested for indecent exposure for being topless in public (treated as a woman for the purpose of arrest) and then thrown into a men’s jail for it (treated as a man for the purpose of punishment). This is the primary oppressive modality faced by trans women. The fact that further-transitioned trans men / mascs face similar expressions of these oppressive modalities to trans women (despite there still being marked differences in how it can manifest) makes solidarity and understanding come more naturally, on top of those trans men / mascs no longer facing anywhere near as much pressure to constantly reassert their own masculinity or regender themselves as women, with all of the resulting problematic behaviour that that pressure can manifest.

So what do we do about it?

We talk, we elucidate the realities of how oppressions can manifest differently instead of trying to flatten everything and accuse people who dare to highlight those differences or express exasperation at trans men’s / masc’s problematic behaviour as being infighters or “transmisandrists” or what have you. The root of this problem is that we’re shut out of knowledge-seeking and knowledge-creation about ourselves, we have to fight against this epistemic injustice.

"They think the lesson of the Holocaust is…you fight the big powerful people hurting the weak people." Excerpt below from "The Continuing Appeal of Nationalism" by Fredy Perlman.
The idea that an understanding of the genocide, that a memory of the holocausts, can only lead people to want to dismantle the system, is erroneous. The continuing appeal of nationalism suggests that the opposite is truer, namely that an understanding of genocide has led people to mobilize genocidal armies, that the memory of holocausts has led people to perpetrate holocausts. The sensitive poets who remembered the loss, the researchers who documented it, have been like the pure scientists who discovered the structure of the atom. Applied scientists used the discovery to split the atom’s nucleus, to produce weapons which can split every atom’s nucleus; Nationalists used the poetry to split and fuse human populations, to mobilize genocidal armies, to perpetrate new holocausts.
