I felt it was lacking that there were no Simple Mallets on Japanese railways in the 1920s, so I created fictional Mallets, "19700 (Alco)" and "19750 (Hitachi)," and put them into service on the Tokaido Main Line over Hakone, which was a bottleneck for transportation.

I wanted to somehow extract this crazy steam locomotive design as an AI image, so I tried again with Whisk in 2025 and the best result was the image on the left. I then carefully corrected that in MS Paint and the image on the right is what I got.

Recently, I've been using generative AI to draw Japanese locomotives that never existed. I used Clipdrop to draw a mysterious steam locomotive in 2023, and I fell in love with this wicked design, so I turned it into pixel art, as shown in the image on the right.

I agree. Japan began domestically producing locomotives in the 1910s, but their designs were based on British (Type 8620) or German (Type 9600) design due to design considerations. I think it was the C54 in 1932 that established a uniquely Japanese image for steam locomotive design.

I had forgotten. There was also this image. The locomotive was a JGR ED53. The actual locomotive was manufactured by Westinghouse/Baldwin in 1926.

Thank you for watching. This is my personal opinion, but the design of Japanese passenger cars was similar to that of American passenger cars up until the Suha 32, manufactured in 1931. I think that the Japanese design was established with the Oha 35 that followed.
