we both agreed that it was worth the effort. the response was so amazing, and though Lark wasn’t even attending(!!) they were loving the reactions online. i really can’t thank them enough. next time i’ll not do something crazy as to want a light up halo floating above my head 😭

even right before the cosplay walk, i wasn’t sure if it was going to work. i spent most of day 1 setting up and repairing, and day 2 was assembly, which takes a while, halo especially. pictured is a half disassembled Ea right after fanfest, looking like a weird deflated blob.

fitting it into suitcases worked out well! the crazy helmet fit, spine bent enough, and we had measured the halo bits just right. it’s hard to notice, but the halo’s interface structure is split into quadrants, and the hula-hoop splits, and then coils on itself to half the size.

after this it pretty much got finished! another pipe was added to support the front of the halo and it helped. we did a panic dash to construct a backpack to support the helmet a bit better, which worked out good enough that i was comfortable the majority of the time wearing it.

mounting the halo was an ordeal, as the hoop bent and twisted under its weight. the glue failed, acrylic cracked, and had to redo it to get a better angle. pictured, it just doesn’t stay up. there were last min big changes as it also put a concerning amount of strain on my neck.

here we’ve started to sew fabric around the halo, to give it a cleaner finish. the fabric is sewn to the side rings, and then during assembly the fabric is loose in the middle, and is then stretched around the interface fabric (which is around the hula-hoop).

meanwhile i finished up the eyes, and i think at this point we had added a padding layer so the cloak could sit slightly wider off the body. around this time there was also much planning and difficulties regarding mounting the halo on top of the whole thing.

dyeing the fabric was so time consuming! essentially a week was dedicated to the initial dyeing of the cloak bits. the gradient was also really hard. Lark decided to paint the gradient on with dye, spending hours crouched down outdoors and messed up their legs doing so...😭

for the external structure, we chose interfacing fabric. it’s rigid enough, and didn’t affect the light much. it was so hard to create this kind of shape! 😭 there’s many more details about the halo that could be said, so i can go more in depth if someone is interested.

behold! inside the halo is a hula-hoop! this was started earlier, but the best picture to show is after the led strips were routed. much math was involved, and many worries were had about the light, but it looks super good on camera, so i think it worked out great in the end.

fabric was then pinned to the foam fingers, templates created, cut and sewn in black, and then sewn to some black dress gloves! the loose parts here were later trimmed and hand-sewn. the hands were finished quite early!

early small-scale halo prototype! the halo was easily the most complicated part of the whole project. many days just spent planning and thinking of ways to even feasibly do it (and fit it in a suitcase!!!)

like Anden, it all starts with a hoop skirt and a special helmet to hold it! the helmet got many upgrades later… (i’m inside it in the second image!!) every step of this project took longer than expected, we spent quite a while shaping the “skeleton” parts.
