This barren area of the #Syrian desert was home to an informal settlement of up to 50,000 displaced people at its peak. The #Rukban (‘berm’) camp was never recognized by the #UNHCR and received minimal assistance. It's hard to imagine how people survived there for so many years.

They are also carrying out several other activities in order to help rebuild #Syria and assist the new government in this work

People have had enough war. The vast majority of Syrians of all ethnicities & sects want unity & have had enough of Assad's & others' divide-and-rule policies. I'm cautiously optimistic HTS will keep the promises, if only because there's not the military power, funds or energy for more fighting.🤞

Detainees' families have been protesting against them in Idlib for years. I suspect/hope that's one reason they're rushing to rebrand, because they don't have the power or support to roll those policies out across Syria - post-Assad, people are a lot less likely to accept tyranny again.

Unless the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) has already purged its regime-infiltrated leadership, their efforts to support #detainees sounds like a bad joke. We know of young men who were forcibly returned from #Rukban with the #SARC under 'reconciliation' agreements just to disappear in #Sednaya.

It was Syrian revolutionaries who took Assad out, or at least chased him out. Just waiting for him to fall from a Moscow window now - seeing him get terminal justice after a Nuremberg-style trial & seeing Syrians get the billions he stole back would be better, but that seems a bit over-optimistic.

💯 I met one like that in c. 2007 in Kuwait (was working at a paper there), an American doing M.E. Studies at uni, nice but dim - he trotted off to Iraq for a day trip, refused to listen to locals saying 'Bad idea'. His dad was in govt, so he's probably a WH "Middle East expert"/ policy wonk by now.
