We're are losing contacts and work opportunities by withdrawing from Instagram, but it's not worth it to stay. We would rather succeed or fail on our own terms, rather than compromise our ethics along the way.

The whole system is designed to create an addiction based on hatred and to make people buy things they don't need. Whatever positive impact we might have been able to make on Instagram is just not worth it. The famous "N*zi bar" story comes to mind.

Every post on Instagram et al is free labor you are doing for Meta, all in exchange for the privilege of watching ads, receiving misinformation, and being exposed to an algorithm designed to make you angry so that you spend more time arguing with people ... and watching more ads.

We are done. We are leaving Instagram for good and we won't be using any Meta products. It was a surprisingly easy decision, since with the recent changes at Meta, there is no other ethical option.

For us, growing up queer meant not finding representation in media. We only could see ourselves in villains and monsters, shameful stereotypes or side characters who die in terrible ways. And, more recently, in characters whose main aspiration is to be considered "normal", to fit in, to assimilate.

Because our lives are not a bottomless pit of misery and neither are they an endless succession of parties. Nor a "gay" version of "normal". Our lives are all of that and none of that and much more. Our lives are diverse.
