The article grows out of the Views of Violence project, funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark's Sapere Aude scheme. I am grateful to Saeed Al Batal, Christine Crone, Ditte Marie Munch-Jurisic and Yael Granot for input for the article and to Jon Schubert for being an excellent editor.

I really like this article and hope you will read it, share it and let me know if you have any thoughts on it. It is open access with the wonderful Allegra Lab. I'm particularly hoping to hear thoughts from conflict photographers and psychologists.

Filming is also not the same as fighting - but using the affordances of image technologies, there is an element of fighting in filming. That is, filming relocates the fight to other times and places, and potentially to other people.

I see filming as a threat response that is not the same as freezing even though people might experience feeling frozen with the camera.

Looking at two very different cases of filming violence - from Syria and Denmark respectively - I discuss how people find a sense of safety in the camera, even when it seems irrational - and adds to the danger - to film.

Why do people take out their cameras and film in situations of grave danger? In this article, I propose filming as a new response to threat, adding to the commonly recognised responses of fight, flight and freeze. allegralaboratory.net/fight-flight...

My second co-edited volume, "Theorising Media & Conflict" (2020, with B. Bräuchler), is currently on sale. Drawing on global case studies, it explores how #media & #conflict mutually shape one another & establishes their interplay as a distinct field of study. www.berghahnbooks.com/title/BudkaT...

🌏🎥📸💡 The whole ‘the world in your pocket’ idea reaches a whole new level when looking at cameras from the perspective of the mine, as @siobhanangus.bsky.social does in her brilliant book, Camera Geologicala - An Elemental History of Photography (Duke, 2024). Warm recommendation from here!! ✨✨✨

Interessant artikel. Men det er ærgerligt I bruger ordet ‘mener’ når I refererer forskeres udlægning af deres faglige viden. Det reducerer forskning til holdninger.

How can one act towards a future that is impossible to perceive? Birgitte Stampe Holst and I discuss this in a new article in Social Anthropology/Anthropologie sociale.

And not to condescend anyone from my former “tribe,” please consider looking at resources posted by @columbiajournalism.bsky.social’s DartCenter.org which provide crucial guidance on trauma-informed reporting. These are moments we all need to do better, for Syrians and for our collective humanity.
