Covers I Can't Use for Book 3 in the Pagan Jones Chronicles... Festival of Spies.
A mock up of a fake book cover using the Penguin Classics template for Festival of Spies by Nina Berry. The black and white photo used is from the Cannes Film Festival in the early 1960s. Two fashionable women walk away from the camera toward the white Carlton Hotel along the busy palm-tree-lined boulevard. A man in a uniform facing the camera glances back at them over his shoulder.

Covers I Can't Use for Book 2 in the Pagan Jones Chronicles... City of Spies.
A mock up of a fake Penguin Classics cover for my book, City of Spies, which features a black and white photo of a couple embracing or perhaps dancing under a chandelier. You can't see the girl's face, just the knot of her hair and her neck, oh, and also her hand, which she's put over the mouth of the very handsome man to shut up him.

There's a cool site where you can mock up your own Penguin Classics book cover, so I did that with my own books! The Pagan Jones trilogy is coming soon, so voila - the first Cover I Can't use for Book 1.... This is the 1961 Dior suit-dress Pagan is wearing the night the Berlin Wall goes up.
A mock up for a Penguin Classics book cover for The Notorious Pagan Jones featuring a photo of the classic 1961 Dior suit-dress with leather gloves. It is so gorgeous and flattering and practical, made of brown wool, with a wide belt, long sleeves, and a cute bolero jacket attachment. I want one! The protagonist wears this outfit when she's caught on the wrong side the night the Berlin Wall goes up.

Paused to discuss the beauty of the sunset with this French bulldog, but he just kept staring at the top of my head. His ex was a redhead too. It's a thing.
A French bulldog that's mostly black with a white chest looks up at the camera with big brown eyes, mouth slightly agape. All redheads don't know each other, Rosco!

Next, I stopped to chat with the Narnia lamp posts outside this condo. Great gossip. Mrs. R is stepping out on Mr. R and she kissed the sideliece in the Narnia lamplight! Much more interesting than Mr. Tumnus.
Two white lamp posts outside a yellow condo, behind red metal fences. They each have four heads, well, 4 lamps on top of the posts, but don't let that throw you. Makes for a cacophony when they talk, though.

Encountered on my walk today: a rose "bush" ... tree? Seven feet tall, and bit full of herself because of it. Okay, okay, you're beautiful. Stop fishing for compliments.
A very tall rose bush tree with pink roses clustered at the top. She's got her hands, er, branches on her hips expectantly, waiting for me to compliment her. And she's gorgeous, sure, but I was too contrary to give her what she wanted.

It's Greta Garbo day on Turner Classic movie, and I realize I've never seen Conquest w/Charles Boyer. Setting my VCR. Remember those? If you haven't seen the great Ninotchka, it starts at 1:15pm PT. Fabulous, hilarious film, directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch.

Throwback Thursday to the 2010 SCBWI conference in LA. Can't remember the gentleman's name, but I'm next to him, then the fabulous Leah Odze Epstein, then my amazing critique partner and writer Elisa Nader. (Photo by Rita Crayon Huang, copyright SCBWI 2010.)
Golden hour photo of four people... an unnamed gentleman in sunglasses, then redhead Nina, then Leah also wearing sunglasses, and Elisa in sunglasses and leather jacket. Wait. Am I the only one not wearing sunglasses? Oh well. We're all smiling and wearing our lanyards. Rita takes a great photo.

In addition to showcasing the Don Juan soundtrack on the original (!) Vitaphone disc synced with the film's final reel (sounded pretty great for a 100-year-old record) Archives brought out some amazing bits of history. Like Ilsa's outfit, Paul Henried's suit, and Sam's piano from Casablanca.

Warner Bros had a 100 Years of WB sound on the lot today, the anniversary of the premiere of Don Juan with its synchronized score. We saw the final reel of the film where they used the actual 100-year old Vitaphone disc for the sound. A veteran protectionist handled it. Tricky stuff.
A one sheet brochure for the WB Celebration of Film Sound at the Steven J. Ross theater on the Warner Bros lot in Burbank. It's a dark cream color with a fancy border. A poster for the 1926 film Don Juan featured outside the SJRoss theater. It's a reproduction of an old poster deoicting "John Barrymore in Don Juan" showing Barrymore wearing a deep V neck and red cape in profile, of course, clutching Mary Astor, who is mostly wearing a lot of hair.

I've been lying on my couch reading for hours because this book is so so good. It depicts nothing like my childhood in Honolulu, yet it stirs so many feelings and memories.
Cover of The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. It shows a black-haired girl in a red coat seated in front of wallpaper filled with roses and birds. The girl's bright blue eyes stare out at you. That's Maeve, sister of the book's narrator, and she's amazing.

Garbo. Flesh and the Devil. I will take no further questions.
Shot from Flesh and the Devil showing Garbo kissing John Gilbert. Her lips are inches from his, but her eyes are on us, on the camera. She knows we're watching. And she likes it. This movie is ridiculously hot and sexy and crazy and you should watch it.Garbo in a publicity still from Flesh and the Devil looking at the camera with perfect hair and that heavy-lidded gaze that'll scorch your pants off. Sure, she's wearing beautiful jewelry and the lighting is amazing, and her eyebrows are perfectly arched. But it's those eyes, man. She knows what you want.Garbo looking super hot and pensive in a low-cut gown, jeweled pendant, and danging earrings. She's slumped every so slightly, as she often is, in the sexiest sort of slinky way.John Gilbert (looking pretty great himself) kissing a recumbent Garbo on the cheek as she stares off in the distance with eyes like limpid pools that'll draw you in until you drown.

Amazing bookstores: Seminary Co-op & 57th St Books. And the most underrated, under-reported great museum in the city, the Institute for The Study of Ancient Cultures Museum, where I worked as a student wrapping up items from the gift shop. It includes a Persian stone bull's head, my one true love.
A shot of the great bull's head from Persepolis, a black stone carved head of a bull, its neck gracefully curved, hair picked out in impeccable rows arcing up its head and around its jaw. A thing of beauty and power. A thing college-aged Nina dreamed of stealing away, though it weighed many tons, to live with her forever.

Switched briefly to Turner Classic movies and thank God, Carole Lombard is hosting a clatch of twittering women in the most ridiculous bedroom I've ever seen. I think some of the walls are padded satin.
Screenshot of my TV from the movie "Fools for Scandal" showing a gorgeous Carole Lombard wearing a silk bed gown with a fur collar in a sumptuous bed with a 10-ft high padded headboard. A row of eight women face her, all wearing hats and stoles. The bedroom around them is enormous, with wall to ceiling slated blinds by the bed and a padded fabric wall next to them. Everything gleams like it's made of satin.

Just dipped into my Wallace Stevens collection randomly and read this absolute banger of a poem called Men Made Out of Words. Seems to me he's saying we are driven to act "by the fear that defeats and dreams are one." Plus: "Castratos of moon-mash" "Torn by dreams" I fucking love poetry.
A screenshot of the Wallace Stevens poem:
Men Made Out of Words

What should we be without the sexual myth,
The human revery or poem of death?

Castratos of moon-mash—Life consists
Of propositions about life. The human

Revery is a solitude in which
We compose these propositions, torn by dreams,

By the terrible incantations of defeats
And by the fear that defeats and dreams are one.

The whole race is a poet that writes down
The eccentric propositions of its fate.

Bellows Beach yesterday. My favorite place in the universe. Even too windy, with warning flags and choppy waves, I loved it. Tempting fate by going back today.
A glorious stretch of white sand stretches toward sheer green cliffs with frothy turquoise ocean on one side and dark green ironwood trees on the other. Blue sky and white clouds above. Hardly any people below. Looking the other way down the beach. The sand here is so soft, fine, and white. The puffy white clouds above are echoed in the frothy white waves in the ocean below. An orange warning flag stands out. A lifeguard stand rests in the shed of the trees. A few people walk the shoreline.

The gray lumps in the photo are two monk seals on Kaimana beach today, Oahu. The lighter one is a mom who had her pup there (pup not visible), and the darker one is her fully grown son, who swam up to check on her as we watched. So cool! We NEVER saw monk seals in the 80s. Conservation efforts work!
