Jean-Pierre Serre turned a 100 years old! Here's what he said many years ago about learning math. It still holds, even in the time when the machine does math better than us. Math is closer to the pursuit of art. This is what the recent Leiden Declaration on AI and Math defended.

A genuinely funny read when PARRY, a paranoid patient bot, met the psychotherapist bot ELIZA, as arranged by the Internet evangelist Vint Cerf in 1972. It ends by PARRY getting billed $399.29 for the session.

We’re addressing the Authors Guild’s Human Authored Certification Mark in the new issue of @pw.org My take is we need more nuance than human vs. machine-authored. Every text after 2022 is potentially AI-touched, just as every iPhone photo is computationally mediated. Transparency matters.

What's interesting about the whale vowel discovery is the use AI models as a prevention tactics against the researcher's tendency to anthropomorphize--only to discover that the whales don't have some alien stuff going on but rather have vowels like us! Searched for alien language, found vowels.

3. A potential new layer to study LLMs in their global scope through the world literature framework, based on Moretti’s distant reading approach, Damrosch’s pragmatic optimism (canon, hyper canon, shadow canon; glocalisms), and Apter’s concept of untranslatability. We have a CfP out for this one!

2. The critical theory layer that reflects on issues such as monolingualism of LLMs and revoked the structuralism v poststructuralism wars from the 20th century. I discuss structural monolingualism of LLMs with its two faces: surface monolingualism and synthetic monolingualism.
