I wanted to add more detail to this but the word count is such a prison. Anyway the Evans sisters are truly so tragic to me like I'm thinking of 12 year old Petunia begging Dumbledore to be let into Hogwarts because she didn't want to be left behind and Lily thinking her sister hated her so much

Lily would always choose them and no one would choose her. Petunia was alone. She would never know the touch of magic. Would never be welcome in her sister's world. Would never find that missing piece of herself she'd lacked at 11 years old. But she was fine with it, she was fine, she was perfect.

Lily had of course denied her that request. Ridiculous claims about how she had family there she couldn't leave behind. Yet she'd had no problem leaving Petunia behind. Until that moment, she'd held out hope Lily would come to her senses but she knew now that she never would.She had picked her side

Petunia had instantly cursed herself, the words had escaped her before she could help it. But how could she not try? Here Lily was telling her the world of magic hated her, didn't accept her. They didn't appreciate what they had stolen from Petunia. Her baby sister, she had to try.

And then one day things changed. Her and Lily didn't talk anymore but one summer evening she overheard her crying in her room and walked in on instinct. She asked Lily what was wrong and she'd explained through tears. "They hate people like me" "So don't go back. Have a life here instead, with me."

She didn't know who she was doing it all for. She knew on some level that she was punishing herself. She'd never allow herself to be overlooked again. She may not matter in Lily's world but in this one they all envied her. They looked up to her even if Lily didn't anymore. She didn't need Lily.

The thought of being perfect consumed her, she was losing Petunia in the pursuit of her ideal self. She no longer played in fields, she practiced ballet. She didn't go out with friends, she studied. She was never enough for herself, she had to work harder, be better, be smarter.It was all or nothing

She was possessed. She had to at all times be perfect, had to make up for whatever it was that she lacked.She would be the ideal student, the ideal woman, the ideal person.She would be 10x the person Lily was and then she would regret leaving her behind.Top of her class, top in ballet, top of it all

There was something wrong with her, there had to be. Something fundamental that was missing from her, something that Lily had and she didn't. But what was it? Why didn't she have it? She became obsessed with the thought of being perfect. Surely she could balance this out if she was the very best.

And yet Petunia could never move on. It weighed on her, everytime she passed by Lily's empty room, everytime she wanted to tell her sister something only to find her gone she was struck with the same thought: why wasn't I good enough? The thought grew within her until it took on a life of its own.

Lily came back every summer but it was never the same. The distance between them only grew, this new world that she'd chosen over Petunia loomed over them like an ever present shadow. Their interactions grew forced, gone was the tenderness they'd shared in their youth, but they were still children.

Part of her had hoped that Lily would turn them down. That she'd choose Petunia instead of this freak world that Petunia could not venture into. That she'd say "no thank you, i'll stay with my sister". Because that's what Petunia would've done. She never abandoned her like this. But Lily was gone.

The jealousy festers within her, ugly and rotten. Why is it that Lily could preform these tricks and she couldn't? What was wrong with her? Something had to be wrong with her. Lily got a letter to a magical school and she got nothing. What was she missing? Why didn't they want her?

When Lily first starts showing magic, Petunia is so curious. Except Lily would never tell her how she's doing it. It's selfish really because Petunia would have explained to her if it was reversed. She knows she would have. She knows she's jealous but she can't help it. How??? she keeps wondering.

Petunia Evans would tell you with no hesitation that her little sister was her best friend. She saw no reason to be embarrassed by it, the moment Lily was born Petunia knew what it meant to love unconditionally. There was no better way to spend her days than with Lily in the fields. Her happy place
