Today we're discussing, as the great Seal once said, "my power, my pleasure, my pain." The Shadow King has us thinking about politics of pleasure and who gets to use power. Also, trips to Japan and Canada and the first appearance of Alpha Flight. spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/RAKrhgR2F6b

New episode dropping tomorrow! We're covering Uncanny X-Men #107-1011 and taking a short detour into Iron Fist #15 to see Wolverine rip up a photograph. If you haven't caught up on the comics yet, tonight's a great time to read!

Four panels of wolverine ripping Scott Summers out of a picture, leaving only Jean Gray. Narration: Wolverine is a loner, or was. These days, he's not so sure. Wolverine: This is crazy. What am I doin' moonin' over a lousy frail?! Love 'em an' leave 'em--that's always been my way. 'Til now. Jean Grey is...different. I can't get her outta my thoughts. Man, how can she think she loves a gutless wimp like Summers? He ain't fer you, lady. I am.

Uncanny X-Men #96, Claremont's first full plot, also came out in December 1975 (and featured the same N'Garai demons this Iron Fist story did). And then Phoenix showed up in Uncanny #101 in October '76. So Claremont pitched a firebird to editor Archie Goodwin and then to Marv Wolfman a year later.

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 02/08/2026

Claremont (with artist Rudy Nebres, part of the wave of Filipino comic artists we talk about in our episode covering Uncanny #106) wove an epic tale of death, resurrection, and loss in these six issues, running from December 1975 to May 1976. Witness the firebird!

MIgnola eventually abandoned mainstream superheroes for the "indie" adventure boom of the '90s and Hellboy (initially scripted by the aforementioned John Byrne). Then came the del Toro movies, the BPRD expanded universe etc. But it all goes back to Alpha Flight and Rocket Raccoon.

020

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

My first encounter with Mignola was behind this flashy Rob Liefeld cover to X-Force #8. I was SHOCKED to go from the multitude of lines and arbitrary framing of Liefield to the thick blacks and dramatic close-ups of Mignola. It set me down a path of looking for & respecting moodier and sparse art.

140

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

(And on the subject of original colors versus reprints, check out this original New Mutants Annual cover compared to the one recolored for modern reprints. The brown is bad!)

140

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

He also did covers for the mediocre 1991 crossover Kings of Pain. BUT, like with his X-Men Classic covers, it was very cool to see him occasionally inked by P. Craig Russell, one of the first out gay artists in mainstream superhero comics. The feathery inking gave Mignola's art a much ligher feel.

141

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

His Alpha Flight style was pretty rough, and you can see the influence of '80s indie comics and fanzines. But you also got to see him dial in and "become" the modern Mike Mignola. Check out his covers to the reprint series X-Men Classic.

140

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

X-Men was such a cultural gravity well that it attracted lots of artists that might not typically be associated with superheroes. So before Mignola became the darling of creator-owned horror, he flirted with mutants. One of his first big jobs was on X-Men spinoff Alpha Flight, following John Byrne.

121

Nightcrawler is My Boyfriend Podcast @nimbf.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

I love buying older X-Men reprint collections for a few reasons (often cheap, often closer to the original coloring), but I also love that they often come with new cover art, such as this cool Days of Future Present image by Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame. Check out those chonky guys & gals!
