Under present conditions capital is degrading working conditions while searching for new avenues of profitability, it transforms what is necessary for the reproduction of life into mechanisms of revenue extraction. Exploitation extends into housing and other spheres of everyday life.

Despite a premature “farewell to the working class,” the questions of labour and class are back. Classes do not disappear because we stop speaking about them. Exploitation is not suspended when it falls outside our conceptual universe and vocabulary. Capital continues to depend on labour.

I mention this because it encapsulates a mode of knowledge production founded on an absence with material consequences. In parts of academic debate, class ceased to be considered a useful concept, as though the relations of exploitation and domination that constitute it had disappeared as well.
