In some non-writerly Nikki happenings, I did GBJam a few weeks back, and as part of that I've been learning to do chiptunes for Gameboy hardware. To practice that, I encoded The Dear Hunter's "Red Hands" into a Gameboy chiptune file, and I think it turned out pretty well!

Loved Neverender Festival! My feet hurt, I'm sore everywhere, I lost my voice from shouting along with the Coheed crowd, and the 100+ degree heat really got to me by day two. Worth it! I hope they bring it back here next year (maybe in winter months though!)

Like, seriously, this should be a full on trope, not a relatively rare occurrence. I want it to be common enough in queer fiction that it gets its own TVtropes page. (I propose "double trans UNO reverse situation" as it's called in my book, if anyone ever wants to make that happen.)

I mean, how affirming! The confusing yearning between two closeted trans people, strangely falling for each other despite being mainly or exclusively attracted to the gender their corresponding love interest is trying to repress! It's so beautifully symmetrical. We need MORE books like that.

I find that a little ironic, because I originally started outlining Fallow as a sapphic romance. But as soon as I found Ash's voice early in the first draft, it was obvious that he needed to transition too. And the story is so much stronger for that.

I've been surprised to find that even among T4T romance readers, most aren't interested in reading TFxTM at all. There have been so many "please let it be yuri" or "not my cup of tea" type comments on my TikTok posts.

So, anyway, my 100% human-made trans romance novel, Fallow Till We Bloom, took a full year to write and edit. I have a full time job and two young kids, so I stayed up late writing every night, all without any "help" from the word-stealing calculators they've sold as "intelligence."

The fruit fly brainscan going around as freeware on the internet fills me with terror beyond comprehension. I wrote a whole book warning about this shit. I wonder if the simulated fruit fly's brainscan experiences something akin to dysphoria when mapped into a different body than a fruit fly's.

I was just saying I think the map thing should've done more to target specific SoCal-isms! It'd be so easy to ask how we refer to numbered freeways to disambiguate "vaguely west" from "unmistakably SoCal"

I think it might be a good idea for quizzes like this to try targeting a few Southern California peculiarities, because Hollywood has standardized our vowel patterns across the country so it's harder to clock actual SoCal residents with that.

This was a pretty good dialect quiz. I don't think it did much to specifically clock strong Southern California's more unique regional indicators (like how we refer to numbered roads) so I'm not surprised it clocked the more unique Jerseyisms I picked up from my mom over my SoCal.

The biggest shoutout to the random festival girls at Daisy Chain Fields who got fed up with the immobile traffic jam in Lot 2 at almost midnight, walked to the middle of the road, moved traffic cones, and directed the traffic on their own. Absolute legends.

As a 35 year old, the lineup was great! It's just that all the thirty-somethings who went to the festival are exhausted from being stuck in a parking lot for 2 hours after the festival, so we didn't run to BlueSky about it!

happy to report that I survived Daisy Chain Fields, despite having my heart PIERCED by Sarah McLachlan (who came onstage and dedicated "Angel" to Dolly Parton.) Stevie Nicks ending the festival with Landslide did not help me stop crying

As someone with quite a bit of dread about injections, switching estradiol cypionate from weekly to every eight days really helped psychologically. Instead of dreading Monday for half the week, now when my phone reminds me it's shot day, it's just a random inconvenience
