I know the protocol itself is DOA but I really hope the rest of this shit hole crumbles soon. what a total waste

this God forsaken website suspending people for saying Kirk's death was good is yet another reason why this place will never replace Twitter. such a horrible vibe here as usual

is there real recourse for Mississippi users at this time? do we have any reasonably functional third party bsky appviews? I'm not sure how much the situation has changed since I last looked into everything

for now, they bypass the protocol until the devs implement private stuff. so they work like any other centralised web app
010
eris @nihili.st · 13/08/2025
it doesn't support private anything for any reason at this time

I mean if you can't properly resolve and verify a handle, you probably shouldn't be interacting with it as a safety thing. you can also probably rewrite the DID to be more friendly, like <plc id>.plc.directory
110
eris @nihili.st · 12/08/2025
probably just pretend something to the front of the handle since it's most of the way there already. either some static thing like 'at' or the user's DID or something. would depend more on the use case tbh

eris @nihili.st · 29/07/2025
am I using it right now?
120
eris @nihili.st · 29/07/2025
I'm not entirely sure what the point is in soft blocking and why it would be used over regular blocking. surely some of these annoying people would eventually create a troll's appview that doesn't respect these records
010
eris @nihili.st · 29/07/2025
which may be why it's all a bad idea

I assume they mean the relay?

eris @nihili.st · 24/07/2025
support for private data is a prerequisite for on-protocol DMs, so who knows when that'll happen, but afaik it is planned

if you would like to become a sysadmin in exchange for purely theoretical benefits, then hosting a PDS is a great option

I will ask my grandma to verify my PGP keys then

I don't see #2 as a viable path since the short form video space is already crowded with big players and it's going to be hard to make something substantially better than tiktok (which succeeds imo because their algorithm is so good)

eris @nihili.st · 30/06/2025
feed algorithms have always been black boxes and selling points for social media apps so the assumption that people would provide good quality feeds for the network for no reason really never made sense to me. maybe monetisation needs to be better proven for protocol services?
110
eris @nihili.st · 24/06/2025
yeah, afaik you can't filter the firehose. there are some tricks you can do for some optimization, like if you want to listen to a certain DID you could look up its PDS and listen to that event stream instead of a relay. I'm kind of surprised the relay doesn't have that functionality by now tbh

I'm not currently aware of any PoC for malicious Jetstream but I'm also not super in the loop lol
010
eris @nihili.st · 24/06/2025
I'm sure there are ways to verify the data from Jetstream but imo once you start asking these questions, it makes more sense to consume & verify the binary firehose instead. then you don't need to worry as much about hammering PDSes hosted on pis, etc. and ideally libraries would make it easy
200
eris @nihili.st · 24/06/2025
personally, I think a malicious PDS would be bad since it has full control over your identity & keys and also should act as a mitm for all on-protocol traffic. so it could modify/refuse incoming or outgoing posts, inject ads into feeds, lock you out of migrating, post or delete for you, etc
110
eris @nihili.st · 24/06/2025
yeah, Jetstream provides an easier way to consume protocol events at the cost of stripping out all of the crypto stuff that allows the events to be self certifying. pretty much any untrusted server or any other way to interfere with those events can go undetected.

I have no problem paying for good quality software but I don't think there is any way I would pay a subscription fee for a social media app

for me and others I've heard/talked to: 1) bad default algo = hard to find what you like, 2) culture, and 3) no privacy

eris @nihili.st · 26/05/2025
also I'm defining success as the network fully functioning in a usable manner without bsky llc, and I think the bluesky team has defined it that way themselves as well
000
eris @nihili.st · 26/05/2025
2) bluesky themselves. why run your own infrastructure when it's not even going to make a difference for your users? how will you even attract users if you can't set yourself apart? when the baseline experience is already the best, the only way to force decentralisation is to be evil on purpose
100
eris @nihili.st · 26/05/2025
I agree, I think the greatest benefits to the UX are the things holding it back: 1) inability for core services to change UX. it ensures consistent experiences, but stops network operators from adding value or collecting ad revenue, which is how the internet currently works, for better or worse

the idea is that labellers can provide third party moderation. the problem is that there's no incentive to provide a global scale moderation service, so you'll likely either need to pay for access or rely on a new steward (e.g. Google, meta) who can sink the resources in exchange for control

if you're just going to admit you lack empathy then any conversation with you about anything is a complete non starter. you do not get an opinion on this.

how do you have all that shit in your bio but lack basic compassion? why would you ever say people who get scammed deserve it?

this reflects my general feelings about bsky and atproto where they seem to be creating a wildly complex system that leaves us where we already were and does nothing to wrest control of social media from what really killed it (capital) and that is largely why i am sceptical of their whole project
021
eris @nihili.st · 22/04/2025
i haven't seen many technical details (and idk typescript lol) so maybe this is a non-issue. they're clearly trying to set up something that vaguely resembles decentralisation but if bsky is adversarial, there doesn't seem to be another org that can handle these "general" verifications
130
eris @nihili.st · 22/04/2025
further, if someone is part of an org now, but then separates, how is that handled? i'm thinking of someone like AOC here, obviously affiliated with the US house, but if she were to hypothetically not seek re-election, who would vouch for her identity? she would still be a known public figure
120
eris @nihili.st · 22/04/2025
when i think about big names on this website i don't think of people who are tied to an org in that way. mark hamill, mark cuban, george takei. these are people who undeniably need the protection of the verified tick, but who other than bsky is supposed to vouch for them?
120
eris @nihili.st · 22/04/2025
this is good and far, *far* better ux than relying solely on domains, but the "trusted verifier" thing still inherits the idea that notoriety exists in relation to Organisations which i don't think makes much sense

i'm well aware that i'm not an anarchist, and i don't recall saying that i am, so i'm still not sure what point you think you're making

better on what grounds? relying on reactive defences to phishing sounds significantly worse to me. social hierarchies are going to outlive bluesky and everyone using it. i would rather do more to protect actual living people from material exploitation today than design it for an idealised future
030
eris @nihili.st · 21/04/2025
it's a very basic safety feature that mitigates things like phishing by reducing the need to spend time researching if an account really is who it claims to be
020
eris @nihili.st · 21/04/2025
nope, it's completely impossible because of the technology underpinning bluesky. they own their data, which includes following you, and nobody can edit that on their behalf
150
eris @nihili.st · 21/04/2025
these are both completely impossible to implement because of the experimental technology that underpins bluesky. everyone owns their data, which includes who they follow and what lists they've created, and nobody else can edit that data on their behalf
