Hey you are doing your best, don't let social media stress hollow out what you love doing. I know thats hard though. Social media is a content firehose, its not anything your lacking in what you do, there is just a ton of inertia to actually getting momentum.

The vast majority of images generated will be using the same models with limited effort put in with fairly recognizable end results. The challenge for an artist that wants to use these AI's as a medium or tool or whatever will be to have a voice that actually stands out--

I respect the thought out responses, I will even concede that using machine generated images can be a tool in the creation of art but I think a very difficult to overcome sticking point for a lot of people will still be the technical reality of it and the high volume nature of the work.

Yes actually, the entire end result is dictated by the artists choices. When dictating to an ai to produce a particular image I imagine this scenario: If someone commissioned me and in a way similar to how you would prompt an ai and I used my skill (the training data) is the client the artist?

So would you equate someone who uses the output of ai image generators to collage artists then? From my perspective most ai centric creators do the equivalent of looking through a magazine, ripping out an entire page and declaring it their work. Yes they choose the page but its entirely derivative.

I can see where you are coming but they still involve much more decision making in the process. Paint drip art still picks out the specific color, media, angle, canvas orientation, etc, same with shotgun art. He still choose the placement of the cans, color, distance from the panel. His choices.

From my perspective, the images created by machines don't have intent in the way humans do and that intent is what makes human created art what it is. Imagine asking someone to drive you to a valley and declaring the sight art you somehow created when its merely in your presence. You didn't make it.

Thats where you will find skepticism however. Photography also faced that same skepticism (as well as digital art) but managed to carve out its own language of expression through the levers available to it in the process of creating photos. Im not going to convince you to stop, I think thats a waste

Well if you ask someone trained in the arts/art history, the process and context are EVERYTHING. Art is created in a place and time and often in response to something, even just appreciation of the subject. The choice of focal point, the specific choice of emphasis. Thats the artists will and voice.

Over time the ethics of what is effectively plagerism will fall into the cultural background and the environmental costs will decrease. You can run image generation locally but again, its not your image. Thats the entire crux of the argument. The creativity is in your prompt not the output.

Howdy, ill be your first, I just happened upon this post but i'll be nicer than most. I don't believe AI "art" exists. Art requires intent and while your prompt is intent the machine created image is still only the average of many other previous artists work and not your own.

I cannot point to a single person skilled in the arts that NEVER used reference at some point in their career. Anyone making that claim or trying to gatekeep like that is either a liar or an idiot or both. There is no easy way to human art, no wrong way as long as you are putting in the work.

I think there is also an issue of people not really knowing what to say or do when engaging with things they don't already have personal investment in. Something "looking" nice or being skillful isn't enough to overcome the firehose of attention grabbing content online now, even from friends.

Lately I've been feeling a deep compression of my emotions and I think its all about longing for community surrounding things that bring me joy. I really want a place where I can let go of the world being on fire on a time and just enjoy being a dork about #art. Something beyond detached sharing.
