I think this is a splendid idea to do in minecraft, not on sacred land.

Thank you for this beautiful family portrait. Mr. Obama is sitting and . . . awake! Yes, yes, I know that's normal for Obama, however: With the recent "update" in the expected American presidential baseline, I now see that as an ordinary miracle!

I can see where this old-fashioned (like 19th century?) lady comes from. You love your man, and so you assume he's always right. It's funny (and sad) that young women who showed up to a "women's leadership summit" are essentially being told to just follow their men without question.

I agree. The things he says makes me glad that I limit my alcohol use. He was apparently smart enough to get into good schools at one point. My best explanation for his behavior is long-term alcohol-related brain damage. The other explanations I have are less flattering and best left unsaid.

It just occurred to me that he probably spends more time practicing amateur golf, "renovating" DC, and posting on social media than on learning about the economy or pondering on the welfare of American citizens.

You're not the only one. John Oliver said he despises the corruption but can't give it up yet either. But if, in the future, you decide to boycott FIFA, know that you'll be in good company. You've got options, and only you can choose your own path.

Watching this MAGA guy make a fake phone call as he waddled away reminded me of the term "chicken run".

Coming Soon: CMS to Provide $50 Monthly Access to GLP-1 Medications for Medicare Beneficiaries Maybe this will happen "soon" if you're in Texas. Maybe not so much for California or other "blue" states. Sigh. There was a time when I was not this cynical. newrepublic.com/post/210200/...

Also, "Musk Hospital" sounds like a rat infestation to me. That's not Elon's fault, though. Some people, like Adolf H, just don't have good names for hospitals. www.youtube.com/shorts/iCajg...

For a typical billionaire, sticking one's name on a hospital has a positive effect on one's image. For Elon, it's just going to say "I am trying to buy my way out of looking like a jerk." People have made up their minds on him already.

You said: There's not a single "Musk Children's Hospital" . . . If I were an egotistical guy who thought sick children were too far beneath my unrealistic dream of making a colony on Mars, then I wouldn't stick my name on a hospital either.

In grade school, I learned that "the pen is mightier than the sword". If I were to go to grade school in Texas today, I may learn that "might is right" instead. I suppose times have changed.

What surprises me is not the violence of the police officers but the decision to unleash police on kids with the presumed expectation of a civilized result. Police officers can fulfill critical roles in schools with good results, but "armed local muscle of the cafeteria" is not one of them.

Nigel @nigelad.bsky.social · 01/06/2026
When one hires personnel with experience and legal cover for physical violence, and one unleashes them on kids to maintain order, those personnel are likely going to use the tools that they know how to use, e.g. physical violence. I think the system is working within expectations.

I don't see how "This court win proves that no one is above the law." Can't they just appeal to SCOTUS and get their rubber stamp of approval? Wouldn't orange just put the label "official" on it to make it an official act?
000
Nigel @nigelad.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
A darker purpose might be to identify troops loyal to orange in the event that he wants to do another 4 years. The UFC event would self-select for military muscle that would eagerly pay money to be in-person political pawns. Otherwise, why not open up more to non-fattie non-military MAGA people?
010
Nigel @nigelad.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
I'm wondering if there's another way to look at it. If I was a fattie soldier, that means I have a ready-made reason as to why I don't want to spend $$$$ on this modest mushroom of UFC events.

There's something very painful and sad about how this impacts the lives of friends and colleagues associated with any side of the relevant conflict.

Yeah, but US Republican voters as a whole are too ______ to understand the ramifications. I welcome Republicans to prove me wrong in the future by picking a candidate who doesn't have so many red flags.

Wouldn't it be fun if a bunch of people posted here on 7/5 that they did NOT celebrate 7/4 in any form?

Yeah, I agree. If I were him, I would have just set up a nonpartisan event, and then hijacked it at the very, very last minute with my 3-hour long speech about windmills and golden toilets.

If sports betting is ruining professional sports, then the best way to deal with it is to stop giving them money, in my opinion. They don't need our money to survive. I've stopped watching certain sports because of corruption. What is your approach?

US Democrats have an incredibly deep bench. Yet, people like Leonard Leo have managed to outmaneuver them in the local and judicial arenas. Are US Republicans just that much better at long-term planning? If so, why? This is a sincere inquiry without intentional bias towards one side or the other.

Mullin is not known for stellar ideas, but he's still useful. Every minute the media spend on Mullin's less-than-stellar ideas is another minute that the media is not covering corruption, the Republican lead in the House seat-flipping game, the E files, and that genocide I heard about.

I think celebrations are essentially about showing gratitude and appreciation at a social event. What's really important is the show of support not from corporations, but from friends and family, in my opinion.

"Golden Dome" for White House ... cute. I wonder who's going to tell him that gold-laden glass doesn't repel missiles, drones, or stupidity. At least he's not saying Mexico will pay for it.

To be fair, there _is_ precedent for the just-walk-in-and-shoot approach, which was "successful", back in 1865(?), although security is probably somewhat better now. Maybe he played too much Assassin's Creed. In any case, I am glad that the secret service agent is not seriously hurt.

To be fair, JD Vance was a senator before, so Trump probably considered him as an improvement over Witkoff. (The only problem is that, in a varsity game, switching a misplaced junior varsity player for a slightly better junior varsity player doesn't quite change the overall outcome.)
111
Nigel @nigelad.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
I don't understand why JD Vance is getting blowback, on this hail mary of sorts. If I remember correctly, he doesn't have personal expertise on Iran, and he didn't bring any experts from State on this. Besides, if he succeeded in reaching an agreement, then he would make Trump look bad.

Harry, God will surely protect the big boy (according to big boy), but it might not protect his make-up. That's why (I presume) he has a "make-up room" in the Pentagon. Until he can establish a forward‑deployed makeup room near Iran, he will have to refuse deployment!

That's not to say voters in other countries are necessarily better informed. However, I think American voters might want to take a greater interest in their civic duty, because they happen to have a relatively large influence on the risk of global instability.
000
Nigel @nigelad.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
In retrospect, though, I think it's not that surprising. As I understand it, Americans as a whole don't learn much about analyzing public policy choices, seeing through propaganda, or comprehending the implications of budget decisions. I welcome Americans to prove me wrong in future elections.

JV is going to Pakistan without much support from State, it seems. So maybe he's set up to fail. That's not surprising. If he succeeded, he would make Trump look bad, and Republicans would be more open to removing Trump from office. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mZm...

I agree. If I were leading Israel, I'd try to minimize harm to my own citizens too. From a realpolitik standpoint, the big problem here is that Iranian regime change hasn't happened in a way that could be construed as positive for Israelis, I think. Understandable goal, horrible implementation.

2-3 weeks? I guess he's hoping that in 2-3 weeks, people will have stopped talking about the Epstein files. He underestimates women's advocates. He underestimates Iranians. He underestimates the pain of losing friends and family to a war of choice. IMHO.

I don’t think Johnson is delusional. He’s savvy enough to know how he’ll be perceived, and I suspect he leans into that image to make opponents underestimate him. Acting delusional isn’t the same as being delusional. www.thedailybeast.com/maga-goon-mi...

I saw part of his boats "story" or whatever for about 10 seconds. It's almost like he's practiced for decades on how to make people's skin crawl. Having to listen every day to that . . . stuff . . . must be horrible for journalists --- both left and right.

It seems he lets his Inner Child run wild—A LOT. But maybe there's method to the madness of handing out awards. If a shiny 'peace' trophy can keep him distracted from voter suppression and reckless military moves, maybe that's a tiny win in this bleak world.
