ODDADA is fantastic! It's half game, half music composing software. Or maybe 100% of both, if not mutually exclusive. I made a little album with it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbaL... Definitely get ODDADA, it's great for music making inspiration or just playing around and make nice sounds

(also his rant & this quote made me extra curious, so it totally worked to get me to buy it)

It's the right thing to do :) Also he's so wrong, the controls are super tight and have so much depth

ooh I could absolutely see if I can incorporate that

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
oh yeah! It's specific things are the most interesting, ideas that have a clear musical meaning and a source who said it's evil :) I grew up quite religious, and I still feel there's some kind of joy in using and referencing those things. Like, it's making up for time I spent doing religious stuff

I absolutely need to incorporate the Boîte Diabolique into my adaptive music software, I just don't know how yet and maybe if I could get my hands on some industrial strength calcium, I could incorporate the helvetica scenario

oooooooh I love Look Around You I have no idea how I forgot about this scene

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I mean it'd play notes out of the active key but 1: I need to get better at using dissonance and 2: that'd definitely be at least a little bit demonic 😈

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
huh that's weirdly tricky to incorporate in my music software as I don't have note selection by semitone tho I could do baseFrequency * Pow(2, x/12f) and increment x by something as an expression (maybe wrap x within a range so it stays in a reasonable note range) definitely gives me some ideas

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Yeah, the tritone is fun \o/ I also looked up a bunch of occult number sequences and added it into my number sequence module (a sibling to the "tweet randomizer" module)

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I need to find information about music elements that are considered occult/satanic/sinful for algorithmic music stuff Anyone know any good resources? 𖤐🕯️😈🕯️𖤐

It sure feels like we're not that many mergers away from the "world run by <7 mega corporations" setting in a lot of sci-fi.

Do it! If not for the awesome stories the game have to tell, at least do it for the educational aspect, like how you can protect your site's visitors from beefbrain, or learn you shouldn't let friends shonk T-Nubs

Morning cafe trip. Why are people holding phones in front of their face when doing non-video calls? Did something cause people in general to forget how to use a phone?

Thank you! Someone had to impose this ban, I shouldn't have waited so long

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
yeah! It's just, I struggle to find people exploring this particular area, the conversation about the topic mostly stopped, I miss this about 00s and 10s game dev

or maybe they do, but it's just really hard to search for? Even trying to search bluesky for markov chains mainly returns genAI stuff :(
110
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah! In my case I'm especially thinking game development tho. People were doing cool stuff with neural networks so small they fit many times over on 3⅓ inch floppy disks, and talked about it nobody really talks about it anymore :(
120
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah! I really hope so too!

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
All the fun experimental stuff & conversation about pre-20s neural networks (no prompts, no data stealing, no server farms, minimal energy use) died out when the genAI boom started. Is there still a space for that at all, or do I have to accept that field is tainted now?

yeah that sounds like a plan!

(right now for example, I go to sleep 9 in the morning, Swedish time, in a week I go to sleep in the afternoon)

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
oh yeah :) timezone wise it comes down to my non 24 hour sleep wake disorder phase. I'm potentially awake all times of the day, it depends on when during the month

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
oh yeah, I love PEAK also I could definitely play it more (let me know if you're looking for a co-op player)

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But maybe I'm the outlier here, and it's designed this way because it's what most people like? I suppose the game got to sell well. Still, it looks and sounds fantastic, and I'm having a blast exploring the world

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It does suffer a bit from the same problem that almost all open world games with fighting have: too many enemy encounters Games like this rarely trust the player to enjoy some quiet, and just existing in a space, for more than a few minutes.

Overall I'm loving Control Resonant. It has so many absolutely stunning and strange locations. It also does this thing where I have to stop, look and think to plan out how to reach a place (I love this in open world games)

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Control Resonant has great out of bounds exploration so far. I've escaped the map on the sides many times, I'm just working on figuring out how to beach the invisible roof I'm a Keter class SCP. You're not keeping me locked in for long

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Me loving out of bounds exploration and going where the dev don't want me to go, this is basically an invite

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Yeah! I'm just terrible at web programming. It'd be really useful to learn though, but not before I'm done with my current game

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
In this case it's not about who reposts you though, but you see a repost and have to guess who you follow who reposted it Though I'd be up for a game to figure out who reposted me as well :) It could be part of the game game
010
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Bluesky should have an optional game where instead of showing you who reposted something, you can type in who you think reposted: 3 points for a correct guess 1 point for a correct guess (if same person as previous correct guess) 15 points if you correctly guess a person you've never guessed before

You probably already know by now how much I love this game and think you should try it if you haven't but I'm QTing this anyway :)

I think I'm pulling it off! Unlocking the power of green, which I've been neglecting previously

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That's luckily no risk for me. I'm very pragmatic. If I use something like SDL3, raylib or Monogame and build my engine on top of it, I bet I can pull it off My adaptive music software is after all more complex than my 2D engine needs to be, and I successfully made that
010
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Haha :) My plan is just to take advantage of the fact that if the base engine is in line with how I structure code, it'll be more "me" shaped. After all, the code I consistently have the least problems with is my own
110
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But it'd practically be impossible because Unity rejecting constructors, and overrides null checks. It's my last Unity game anyway. After this, I'll make my own tool where this is no probs :)
120
Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Yeah, it's just, I'd have to give attributes to every field, the extra work would cancel out the benefit as this is so easy to detect and fix The best solution would be to if Unity supported nullable reference types, then it could warn if a non-nullable reference field is empty

Nifflas @nifflas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The explanation for the bug is, a particle system was being spawned every frame, instead of just once, as an exception prevented the powerup from despawning. I had forgot to assign a thing in the Unity inspector - which is by far my most common cause of errors, by a large margin.

yeah, I'm not super excited about tools that both lowers the barrier to hacking, while also lets people make software without knowing what their code does Not a super good combo

Blue I have a super easy time to work into almost anything. It's actually my danger color, because I fall back on it too easily, and I have to force myself out of that trap so the entire game doesn't become too blue. But I think I've done a good job with Rhythm Dogggo so far.

New rule! Indie games should have physical trading cards. The cards should have stats, a color, and a symbol (the game devs decided those for their card), but no official game rules. So, people have to make up their own games that utilizes the cards and (optionally) incorporate those card aspects.
