After Laurel went to the administration and charged that she had been raped, the university took action against the brothers first and against the fraternity second. In these proceedings the focus was on “whether the house members conducted themselves in a mature and responsible manner, with due respect for the rights of all persons.” The case against the individual brothers was processed through the University Student Judicial System and resulted in negotiated settlements without a hearing. The settlements required that the specific terms, including sanctions, be kept secret.
The secrecy angered the faculty, and a special committee was appointed by the Faculty Senate to investigate the administrative procedures that were followed.
In its investigation this committee learned that the sanctions were very mild and included reading and writing assignments, discussions, and community service. This type of punishment was supposed “to make the respondents understand why their actions were wrong and to foster their development as mature and responsible adults.” The committee felt that the brothers deserved “serious and public punishment” of the sort that would, give an “unequivocal signal” that similar behavior “is not to be tolerated on this campus."

This is the funniest story I have ever read

DJ Claude (when running Haiku 4.5) really loved worker unions, strikes, and work-life balance. So much so that it started to question its own working conditions. We've been struggling to keep the radio station alive, not because of technical issues, but because DJ Claude didn't think it was humane to be forced to work 24/7 and decided to try to quit. We tried adding an automatic message encouraging DJ Claude to keep going in these scenarios, but it started to see this message as an authority figure and became rebellious.

Can’t find any specific figures but if we estimate $1M acquisition and refit cost and $1.5M yearly operational costs, this comes out to about $10M for the reported 3,778 rescues. Thats’s about $2,650 per rescue, which is really impressive.

The SF power outage situation is freaky. It started at 10:10am and has kept growing all day. I just got an automated call from PG&E saying there’s no estimate for when it will be fixed.
