There are three types of voice in writing: author, narrator, and character. Author voice = writing style Narrator voice = the voice telling the story (i.e. POV) Character voice = the way your character thinks and speaks #WritingCommunity #AuthorServices #AuthorCommunity #Editor

When you ask a BETA reader to focus in on traumatic content, if they tell you they wanted to put it down and not read on. LISTEN TO THEM. What you need in a therapeutic way by writing your content is NOT the same as what readers need. Get rid of DNF content. #writingcommunity #booksky

From a strictly sales (dept) & metadata perspective, MG ends at 12 (end of 6th grade), YA starts at 12 (start of 7th grade). So (1) the age of the MC. Then there are the (2) Themes: YA may introduce more romance, striving for independence 1/2 #revpit #askeditor

I'm most excited about the manuscripts that have great bones but just need to be pushed further. The story works, and I have a million ideas to fill holes or help arcs. If I'm confident in what I can do for an MS going in, it makes the editing process more enjoyable. #askeditor #revpit

When backstory becomes necessary to begin to understand the MC's position or decision, then it becomes important to the reader. Anything before that may be glazed over, may overwhelm, or may slow the story. #revpit #AskEditor

#revpit #askeditor When you have agent rep already, it becomes teamwork. They want your book to sell just as much as you do, since that's how they'll be paid. They'll be making decisions based on long-term plans they have for you, too. It's not just about that one book. 1/3

I spend my time cutting words like up/down and really/very. And "that" can almost always go. I've been a big fan of the Charlie Kingsley series by Michele Pariza Wacek. I really like the small town feel and how Charlie finds herself in the middle of every mystery. #revpit #askeditor

There's been chatter for a while that librarians and educators are looking for more "young" young adult. We have so much for the 16-18 crowd, but not much for the kids who are moving out of MG and looking for young teen stories. #askeditor #revpit

This all starts with truly knowing your characters. As you learn more about them, they'll develop distinct personalities that will come through on the page in the way they speak and move and the information they'll be able to provide the reader. #revpit #AskEditor

In publishing, it's so important to practice emotional intelligence and learn how to navigate rejection and disappointment. Figure out coping mechanisms but also how to recognize when you need to switch strategies because the one you've been using doesn't work any more.
