Today we learnt that the Scottish Government don't keep their word when it comes to protecting our marine #wildlife! Permission granted for a salmon farm to be installed IN an MPA. So our question is, what exactly are they protecting? It's certainly not the dolphins! 😢🐬💔 #science #conservation

Our new paper on #Risso's genetics is finally out. Through samples obtained from stranded individuals our results indicated low genetic diversity & a lack of population subdivision among British Risso’s #dolphins 🐬🐬 #science #conservation

Collaboration is key to deciphering Risso's #dolphin behaviour & habitat use off the west coast of #Scotland. Photos taken by @whalenerd.bsky.social off the Shiants allowed us to ID 11 known individuals, incl. 6 #mums. It takes a community to raise a child, as it does to protect a species! 🐬📷💙
Individual 155 (aka Perdita) with a young calf. Perdita has brought three calves to the area since 2018.Individual 001 (aka Ivan). Ivan was first sighted in the area in 2010 and is assumed male.Individual 197 (aka Masquerade) is a known mum. Masquerade has been sighted in the area since 2006, having brought several calves to the area.

#Norway has begun its #whale hunting season with 1,641 minke #whales allowed to be killed. Over 60% of 452 killed in 2025 were female, >60% of them were pregnant. The harsh reality of the dangers they face in the North Atlantic made this encounter all the more special 🐳💙🥰 #Scotland #conservation

📢 Our new report quantifies the contemporary (2014 - 2024) #whaling & aquatic wild meat takes of CMS Appendix I listed #cetaceans & provides recommendations. All species were hunted in the past, many still are today, both legally and illegally.🐬 🐳 bit.ly/4oK1aOn

📢 A new report documenting 14 years of effort-based surveys shows evidence of high site fidelity & long-term residency of individual Risso's #dolphins off the east coast of #IsleofLewis & a higher ratio of mother-calf pairs than in other Risso’s populations. #conservation #Scotland bit.ly/45zYXyM 🐬

As it's all about the #dolphins, being asked to co-author the Chapter on Risso’s dolphins for the Handbook of Marine Mammals was an absolute honour & a privilege. What a fantastic reward for all the countless hours spent studying these amazing dolphins! 🐬 🥳 More info here - lnkd.in/ed2zwybA
